Open roster spot

Post#1 » by Tarheel » Fri Feb 9, 2018 12:11 pm

So now that we've traded Elf without getting anyone back we have an open roster spot to finish the season. What do you guys think we'll do with it?

I don't know what the G-League rules/contracts are, but it would be good to see Troy Caupain or Rodney Purvis get some run. Both have looked good for Lakeland and there's no risk in seeing if they can contribute.

Maybe we sign Derrick Rose or Joe Johnson after they are waived by their new teams? We could use some new players to develop next to Afflalo, Speights and Mack.

Weltman said they're going to be meeting with their scouts and bring in someone that way. We won't be players in the buyout market, nor do we need to be.

They will go after a PG. DJ isn't a Long term starting option.

So with one less PG, anybody have the numbers for White Chocolate, Skip to My Lou or Anthony No Neck Johnson?

I bet J-Will could still play 10 mpg. He always seemed like one of those guys that'd never really lose "it".

It'll be a young prospect most likely maybe someone off of a G-League team that isn't under a 2 way contract with another NBA team.

You're joking, but I could easily see us trying to sign Rose to close the year out.

He injured himself pretty badly in the Big 3 in the summer. He probably is still not even good to play yet. But the little he did play he still looked like he could contribute to some teams.

Derrick Rose would be great for the tank.

You focused on two players OMDdaily considered.
OMDd Link :Too late for Orlando Magic to sign replacement two-way player

The list is that when Orlando waived Adreian Payne, a roster slot was not opened.

"Never Nervous" Purvis and "TC" Caupain are mentioned although one can wonder if this eats in to Artis' time on the team. From a strictly roster-need consideration, Caupain is the better fit. The Magic is very thin at PG right now, undoubtably meaning Orlando will run sets starting from the PF slot: Hezonja as a ball handler.

Caupain has played very well in the G-league these last weeks. His game is perfect for a 3rd string PG. He would be a practice-squad player getting very little (or no) minutes. But he will be a terror for Augustin to match up with on practice days.

I like the kid and hope he gets a call. Basically I favor him over Purvis and Artis because the Magic needs a PG more than a SG.

More broadly: I wonder if Caupain's game is on the cusp of him finding an NBA slot. His is a good defender and excellent distributor. His Lakeland stat line is good: 15/5/7. As a triple double threat with good defense, perhaps he is only a consistent 3-ball away from getting good looks in The Show.

Right now Rose is looking like he will be the NBA''s first MVP to not make the Hall of Fame. That is not lost to him, and riding the Magic bench is not a path for him to get back toward Hall of Fame consideration.

Rose has fallen hard after all his injuries. He doesn’t defend. He doesn’t make 3-pointers. He doesn’t set up teammates. His only plus skill is attacking the rim, and that’s only so useful without complementary distributing.

There’s little difference between Rose and the Timberwolves’ third-string point guard, Aaron Brooks. It’d be bad enough for Minnesota to use its open roster spot on Rose rather than address a position of greater need. If Rose plays ahead of second-string point guard Tyus Jones – quite underrated – that’d be far worse.

I heard there are a couple of prospects that are still available. One guy named Cash Considerations and another called Trade Player Exception. The thing that concerns me is they have both been career journeyman bouncing around the league. But maybe if we give them a shot who knows since we are going nowhere, might as well.

It should be Caupain or Purvis. It's all about timing though. Do we wait until after the All-Star break to extend a 10-day?

Lakeland has one final game tonight (same time as we play the Bucks) before the break.
