I see Penny has gotten a head coaching job in a Div 1 college b-ball program with the tigers. I know he had success at the AAU /high school level and I’m hoping it translates to his new job.
How many of you guys think he can do a good job there? Could it eventually take him to the pros as a hc? Would you like to see another former Magic player coach this team?

big jump from HS to college. Harder to recruit in college, and you have to recruit to win. And very rare that a good college coach becomes a good NBA coach.

if he is coaching AAU events, that is recruiting the best HS players. so yes, being a college head coach and recruiting against Coach K, Cal, etc is harder than coaching an AAU event that could give him many of the top players in an area.
and there is recruiting in HS, dont think there isnt. more than 1 school has gotten in trouble with playing players out of their areas.

Well, I really wish him well, but his metal will be tested at this level. Additionally, I understand that he will consider Mike Miller as his assistant! I will look for the article and post the link if it hasn't already been done.

This is actually an interesting question.
Does Penny want to coach D1 ball or does he see an NBA future?
Interesting.

There is recruiting in high school as well. That is why you see so many private schools and academies with great basketball teams. They offer scholarships just as college programs do. AAU is another matter.
Hardaway has coached some of the top prospects in the country in AAU and I'm sure that is a huge factor in his hiring at Memphis. They must be hoping that he can convince some of his players to come along with him. This is a massive gamble by Memphis as they are hiring someone with no experience at the collegiate level to replace one of the most accomplished coaches in the country.

That was definitely a factor. He has been close to Wiseman (undeclared) for some time coaching him in AAU level and James is also from TN, so he will probably be the first big name Penny will try and bring in.
