If we re-sign AG what would you want to see out of him?

Post#1 » by otownflava21 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 9:59 pm

IF Aaron Gordon is re-signed by the Magic...regardless of the specifics on contract...what portion of his game would you like to see take the most dramatic spike of improvement? Of course the best case scenario is that at his young age he improves on all aspects of the game, both mentally and statistically.

But personally for me I'd love for Gordon to have a spike in assist to match the LeBrons, Giannis', and Paul George's of the worlds. If Gordon can really progress in assist to be a better Point Forward than he already is projected to be (yes, he has Point Forward skills), then he can surely be the all-star player we've always needed, right?

If Gordon can improve his passing more than anything else this season than I believe he's worth whatever we have to offer him. The guy can already put the ball in the basket now and be a good offensive rebounder now let's see if he can improve that passing skills from above-average to good (and the following season another jump). Maybe surrounding him with better/improved players can only help.

Currently at vs hopeful projections:
2017-2018

18.3apg (+1.9)
8.5rpg (-0.5)
2.4apg (+2.4)

VS
2018-2019

20.2ppg
8.0rpg
4.8apg

If he does that next season i'm happy. What about your opinion on what you'd like to see improve most in his game???

defence against bigs and shot blocking, I think some consistency will come to his offence if he was moved to a more suitable second/third option with a real point guard facilitating and creating good looks.

All i would want to see if for him to continue his improvement. i dont know if you guys remember how raw he was as a rookie, but hes really come a long away in 4 years, and its weird, Its kinda like people forget hes still only 22, there are literally guys that will be drafted this year that are older than him. So if he continues to improve at this pace, he can easily become a superstar, and everything hes done to this point tells me he has the work ethic and drive to do it

Less isolation plays unless they’re going toward the hoop. More concentrated effort on defense, but I feel like he gets “nitpicked” on a lot because people know he can be great on that end.

I think what would benefit him the most is being quicker with the ball in his hands down the court. He can beat anyone when he’s just running, but dribbling slows him down quite a bit. Don’t think it’s necessarily bad ball handling, maybe just get more efficient? Anyway, I have faith. He looks like he busts his ass in the off seasons.

I wonder if moving back to SF is in the cards. Yes, I get it. The last time he tried this, he crashed and burned. But I think the team put more on his plate than they should have. As a full fledged wing, running the offense with the ball in his hands, he just doesn't have the fluidity and mentality to handle it.

But between his improvement as a shooter and the reshaping of our roster (addition of Isaac + this draft), I wonder if he can't be turned into a more traditional 3 and D SF. I say that like those are easy to find, when they really aren't... so I hope his importance in that kind of role does not lessen his value or expectations. Maybe that's what his potential always was. It's just that he never had consistency in his 3pt shot like he has shown this year.

If he just plays off the ball for his shots and takes drives that the defense gives him... while defending other SFs, while Isaac takes over as our full time PF... that might be a working recipe. If we draft a playmaking PG like Young to take pressure off of him or feed him easy baskets, Gordon could fit my expectations that I have on him.

Plus, 3D SFs don't typically get max contract even though they are valued. There will still be time for him at PF, but this thought has crossed my mind.

He’s improved a lot but I’d hope for continued improvement in half court ability to get his man off the dribble and get to the rim. Better ball handling, first step explosion, cross dudes up and blow by. Becoming an exceptional ball handler, not just good, puts him in the All Star game, IMO.

Also, more assists, point forward style. Being a second initiator in the half court and continuing his rip and run fast breaks but making great passes to cherry pickers and trailers (as well as continuing finishing above the rim) to keep the defense honest.

I expect 20+ ppg, 8 rebs, 4 or 5 assists. Would LOVE 40% from 3, but happy with 35+...good decisions mostly, about when to shoot, when to pass, when to drive hard

I want to see him develop his handles. For him to up his assists he needs to be able break his man down 1 on 1, and that requires better handles.

27.4ppg, 8.2rpg, 4.1apg, 1.8spg, 1.8 bpg on 30% usage and 36mpg. 40% from 3pt. 80% from the line.

I think Isaac & Gordon are both pretty positionless forwards. Isaac is long and fast enough to guard both positions. Gordon is fast and strong as well. They both have slightly different strengths on defensive end, but both can handle the faster small forwards and stronger power forwards.

The key is they just need to compliment each other on the offensive end - I think they do.

Just become better decision maker. His off the dribble iso plays are pathetic, if his goal is to become average iso player maybe some day his wish will come true, but right know he has a chance to be elite transition, secondonary ball handler player. When he passes good thinks happen, but he is so stubborn to show everyone he is nr 1 option which he is not.

He is one of most elite finishers around rim in nba, to get better next step is cutting down long 2s, iso plays and playing to his own strenghts. Open 3s, posting smaller defenders, taking slower off dribble in attacks.
Keep improving as passer, willing to play more within offense.

I don't even care about stats and PPGs, i would prefer effective 17 ppg -10 rpg (58% TS ,55% eFG%) over Wiggins type 22 ppg.

No fading away on jumpers, or those weird jump stop contested jumpers he takes. Just more fluidity in his game and higher IQ plays. He's a smart kid, so he should know what he has to do to get it done.

this. his offense this year has been nice to see, when he isnt forcing it. But his defense fell off a cliff.

this is true and there are many 3 & D SF's that arent great at taking their man off the dribble, so he can flourish in that role without having that ability. All depends on his mindset, if he could accept that role

When McGrady signed his Max with Orlando he was a 15/3/6 guy; the next year he went 26/4/7. Frankly Orlando would hope for that kind of jump, and "expect" at least 20 ppg.

Or maybe for it to get to his head. There are loads of NBA ballers that feel a need to live-up-to their contract.

For him to look like an actual leader of a team without one if he’s going to get paid like one.
