On the condition of anonymity, Yahoo Sports asked more than three dozen high-ranking team executives to name two assistants whom they see as the top head-coaching prospects. The only criteria: Execs could not name assistants from their own staffs, and assistants could not have any NBA or major-college head-coaching experience. Nick Nurse with the Toronto Raptors got the most votes with 16. Portland’s David Vanterpool came in second with 13 votes.

Vanterpool gets high praise for his work with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, and receives a nice compliment from Terry Stotts:

Vanterpool, 45, has risen rapidly. He joined the Blazers’ bench in 2012 with Stotts after two seasons as a pro scout in Oklahoma City. In Portland, Vanterpool has worked closely with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum – “He has done a remarkable job with our guards,” Stotts told Yahoo Sports – and is the de facto defensive coordinator on Stotts’ staff, leading a defense that ranks in the top 10 this season. Said Stotts: “He really thinks the game like a head coach.”

Vanterpool, 45, just finished his sixth season as a Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach. He played briefly for the Washington Wizards during the 2000-01 season and also had stints as a player in the Continental Basketball Association and for the European team CSKA Moscow. In NBA.com’s 2017-18 NBA GM Survey, Vanterpool was voted as the fourth-best assistant coach in the league, receiving 10 percent of the vote.

Hennigan also interviewed him in 2016.

He seems to get a lot of love for developing lillard and mccollum... maybe we're drafting Trae Young?

I know nothing about this guy other than I've heard his name before.
And when I think of Portland I don't really think of defense, even tho they have a decent defensive rating.

Why isn’t Trae Young the potential NO.1 pick? Instead the European PG? How does that work?

I really hope we could land Trae Young.

Wow, that's the first time Vanterpool has been brought to my attention and I really like what I heard in that video. He is definitely on my rader. The only problem is we dont have any starting level guard talent on this roster currently. Maybe we would go PG in the draft if he is hired. Or Mikal would be the obvious pick.

Remmeber the last time we acquired players based on our new head coach successful defensive scheme on his previous team...

Vogel buried us as a coach and as a team building advisor.

Yeah, and that's not what I'm suggesting and I don't think there would be a correlation between the two. If management is high on a certain player such as a guard I think it would be smart to bring in a coach that valued player development and had a track record of developing young guard talent. I'm obviously not suggesting us to hire a coach first and then draft whatever player fits his scheme. This management team has more experience than to do something like that.

This isnt about drafting a player to fit a certain coaches scheme, but going into another rebuild hiring a coach that values player development and that has a track record of doing it is going to be a factor.

In the gossip list of about 5 candidates, he was deemed less likely than others, such as Stackhouse.

Vanterpool ticks a lot of management's boxes and would portably have player support. As a player he logged 22 games with the Wizards, and played all over the globe (he should excel at the talent-scout aspect of coaching). He has also coached on the Canadian national team and thus is engaged in player cohesion and development.

As a coach, he has paid his dues. He will know a lot about the G0leaguers and that should help Weltman in finding "the rihght guy" in the 13-15 slots of the deep bench.

As an aside: it is repeated that Weltman is making this hire and not Hammond.

I'd be happy with him.

Man, there's actually a lot of great options available.

The Blazers were 8th in total defense, and that is with the Lillard/CJ combo.

Sometimes I wonder if you watch NBA at all.

TBH, I do not care who coaches this team, all I want are wins.

Exactly. Those defensive results with that all-offensive combo says GOOD COACHING.

I would love to see what a coach like that could do with Isaac.

All coaches value player development. It’s about having a coach that’s going to put the young guys on the floor to get them in game development and doesn’t mind losing the process.

This whole notion about there being player development head coaches, defensive head coaches, offensive head coaches.... it’s all bull ****. You have to have the right players on your team, it’s doesn’t matter who’s coaching them.
