Personal Orlando Magic Draft Strategy

Post#1 » by zaymon » Wed May 30, 2018 10:07 pm

I think it will be interesting to show everyone our personal Orlando Magic Draft Strategy. Draft Thread is a little messy and here we can have all our thoughts in one place to check it out later. I want only players eligible for 2018 draft. Players are ranked from favourite to least favourite. Move to targets are players outside of our picking range who we think are worth moving to.

6th pick

1. Wendell Carter- I bet that he didnt show everything he has next to Bagley. We want to build with length, skill, and character he is all that. He is perfect compliment to Isaac, our FO first building block. I think its easier to find a gem among second round/free agent/undrafted guards than big man.

2. Trae Young- he has to prove his understanding of the game during interviews. I dont question his skill level which is insane. If Weltman thinks he is the one i am all aboard, but i would rather get a guard elsewhere.

3. Micheal Porter- Lots of questions. He has the most to prove during interviews(maturity, selflessness) and workouts(ball handling, quick decision making)

Move to targets (1st round)

1. Luka Doncic- possible franchise talent, strong, skilled. May be a centerpiece of Harden/Lebron/Simmons like offense ( iso initiator + 4 versatile, 3 point shooting defenders). Not likely we will gonna move to him

2. Khyri Thomas- player who impressed me the most during my film sessions with all the top prospects this year. Very strong frame, with impressive wingspan, quite fluid for his build, good driver, secondary ball handler. Very good 3 point shooter. I would love to move to him, he would fit our team right away.

3. Chandler Hutchison- Tall, fluid athlete, good shooter, good driver. After Khyri he impressed me the most.

4. Kevin Huerter- Lights out shooter, crafty, underrated defender, passer. Kind of redundant if we dont trade Fournier.

5. Elie Okobo- Player with tantalizing potential. Already polished offensively, lacking defense but elite physical profile making many posters here interested.

6. Miles Bridges- Strong, versatile defender, good 3 point shooter and secondary ball handler. Propably goes to high to move to him.

7. Mikal Bridges-great player but to low ceiling to pick at 6 and to high floor to move to him without spending a lot of assets. After watching film i would rather have Khyri, Hutchison or Huerter on lower prices.

8. Donte DiVincenzo- If he can guard 2-4 he will be a steal.

Second Round

1. Rawle Alkins
2. Jerome Robinson
3. Jalen Brunson
4. Jevon Carter
5. Alize Johnson
6. Grayson Allen
7. Tyus Battle
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Donte is 6'5 with a 6'6 wingspan, he wont be guarding any 4's and might have a problem with longer 3's. And I love how everyone is putting this ceiling on Mikal Bridges, but allowing other people to develop past their weaknesses.

good effort and work though on your thoughts for each player.

6th pick - Trae Young, by far the best player for us in my opinion

Package both 2nd rounders to move up for DiVincenzo

Yeah, I would be good with this as well. We desperately need some offensive weapons. MPJr has to be strongly considered as well if his back checks out.

Use 6 to trade down to 12 & 13. Draft the Kentucky boys.

SGA
Fournier
Knox
Gordon
Isaac

Not really my strategy but I think there’s a lot of value in the late lotto. I’d trade down if the Clips would. If that happened I’d have to think pretty long who id take.

This but I'd look to grab Josh Okogie... 6'4" with 7'0" wingspan could play 2/3 spots. Had the highest max vertical (tied DiVincenzo at 42) and fastest three quarter court sprint (3.04, DiVincenzo was 3.11 and 2nd) at the combine. Kid blew up at the combine and will likely be a late 1st rounder like DiVincenzo.

TBF would be pumped with either of these guys as a late 1st round pick
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

Watched some film on him, he lacks some spark in his creation skill, his thought process seems slow to me. I would pick him in second round maybe.

he'd definitely be an off ball guard but has the tools to grow. Crazy but this year the late 1st/early 2nds seem to have more to pick from/players that excite me than last years.

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=y7o9u2bx
3 team deal that can help all parties.

Orlando in: 14th pick, 15th pick, Ian Mahinmi and kennith faried.

Wizards in: Vooch, and 35th pick.

Nuggets in: Ross, Mack, 41st pick and okc 2020 1st.

The wizards do this to get out of a bad contract. They get a better player in vooch who will help space the floor for wall and Beal to drive to the lane. They also get a really solid vet PG in DJ who can provide depth and solid leadership on the second unit. Plus they get a pretty good 2nd rd pick in a deep draft.

The Nuggets do this to get out of Farieds bad contract and get a good sixth man in Ross and can save 5million by cutting Mack. Plus they get a solid 2nd rd pick and a nice future asset in the okc pick.

The magic do this to get more young talent and more shots at finding a star in the draft. We eat some bad contracts but they will expire about the time we are ready for contending.

Now with our 6th pick I’d take Bamba. Then with our 14th pick I’d take Lonnie Walker and with the 15th pick I’d take shai gilgeous-Alexander. Then we could roll out a future lineup of SGA, Walker, Isaac, Gordon and Bamba. That lineup would have potential to be the best defensive lineup in the league down the road with room for all of them to grow on offense.

Thoughts? Would we be better off taking Young at 6 then taking walker and Robert Williams if he drops?
