Wendell Carter at 6?

Post#1 » by NavalAviator94 » Tue Jun 12, 2018 6:06 pm

I didn't know much about Wendell Carter but after doing some various reading I'm really warming to the idea of drafting him and ESPN currently has the Magic selecting him in their current mock.

Here is a really good write up on him. Would like to hear others thoughts.

He's a solid player. Nothing flashy and may never be all-star, but he'll have a 12 yr career as a starter. I'd equate him to being Vuc with better defensive effort and less desire to shoot when he touches it.

If Luka, Trae, Mo, and JJJ are off the board, I'd take him.

I would take MPJr over Carter. We don't need solid anymore. We need flash and that might require some risk.

I like Carter, but I would take Young/Bamba/Porter over him for sure.

I like Carter. He's a top 10 player. Not at 6 though. Please Young or MPJ at 6.

If we get to see his medicals and the back is ok, sure, Porter over Carter. But what if you don't get to see the medicals?

There's just too many red flags for MPJ atleast from the seat I can see from. Medical and Personality (atleast what's reported.)

Wendell really seems like a great pick.

- High IQ Player
- Already physically developed player(250 at 15!)
- Per the article, much better speed than what appears
- 41% from 3 and 73% ft
- Very good defensively/rim protection/rebounding
- Soft Hands/Good Passer

The guy doesn't have many holes to his game and he's not too far away from being elite. If he's even close to Al Horford, I would take that all day long.

Like many, I'm intrigued by Trae Young but there's another Duke player that came in pretty polished this past year who ended up being pretty good. Glad I'm not a GM in this draft!

Can you elaborate? The only thing I've read about that could relate to this was an article from MavsMoneyball

"The downside of Carter’s high motor is that he can sometimes play a bit out of control. He has great touch on his passes and a decent handle for a big, but there were times when he would attack and end up dribbling into trouble or forcing a bad pass. Others have noted this, but Carter plays a kind of “tense” game, and could probably benefit from dialing it back a little (I’m much more comfortable teaching a guy to play down than to play up)."

That last sentence brings me back to the struggle with Elf not "playing up."

if we are just taking a solid player, give me Mikal Bridges. Solid wings are more valuable than bigs, you can find bigs to play. Shoot, GS is got minutes from Javale McGee. 2-way wings are valuable.

I've heard of his off-court stuff but I haven't read into them. But I agree, red flags are there.

I like Carter, but I don't trust him to hold up defensively against pick and roll.

He's firmly behind Ayton, Doncic, Young, Jackson, Bamba and Porter Jr for me. The only one of those six I'd possibly take him over is Porter and that's only if his medicals are shot.

yeah lets keep collecting solid 3rd-6th options (instead of risking to draft a top dog) so we could trade them for peanuts few years later...
we didnt have enough of that for last few years

I'm not usually a fan of the guy that starts as a late lottery guy and just starts climbing because of peer pressure from analysts and fans

People are afraid he will not play more than 15 minutes in a play off series and its legit but not in the east. We need to matchup vs Horford, Love, Embiid, Giannis, Turner, Drummond, Valanciunas. I think he will be ok, and we must have someone to guard those guys Isaac would end up in a hospital.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Exactly man. If we draft Carter with 6th, I will be down because after the season we had, we need someone exciting with great potential. Carter doesn’t scream star. Just a solid role player. We need to roll the dice and take a risk with Trae or MPJr

Yes, I think Carter will be solid, but we need a star and we can use free agency to find a center. I happen to like Khem Birch a lot
