Magic Sign Melvin Frazier Jr.

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Fri Jul 6, 2018 8:22 pm

The Magic signed second-round pick Melvin Frazier Jr.

https://www.nba.com/magic/news/magic-sign-melvin-frazier-jr-20180706

My guess is his deal is like Wes Iwundu's last year.

The first year is probably guaranteed with at least some of it guaranteed in year two.

Notice how Justin Jackson has not signed a deal yet.

My bet is they are keeping their options open with him and might even have him pegged as a two-way player.

Good work. Expectations need to be managed of course, but I liked the pick and like the signing.

Frazier has clear NBA skills. He looks to have impact this year in a manner Iwundu had last year. I am excited to see him develop over the next couple seasons in to a quality rotational player.

Why this isn’t on the front page of RealGM, I’ll never know. The site is a hater. We’re coming for you GSW and your hardware this season! :D

From what I just saw, he's lanky, aggressive and a bit out of control. There is something to work with though.

Going to be a learning curve with him. Great athlete and defensive player. Looked a little out of control, but could be a great role player down the line. He stood out more than Iwundu against the Nets.

Read on Twitter

Officially a 3-year deal for Frazier, using a small piece of the MLE.

Should have 7.55M remaining on that.

President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said the Magic had Frazier higher on their board and they were thrilled to get him with the 35th overall pick. It felt like a good pick to grab a role player there. Someone who could defend at a high level and continue to grow as a shooter.

Not sure if it is just me, but at first I read that as a back-handed compliment. Of course at 35 all a team hopes for is a rotational bench player. But surely Frazier seems himself as a future NBA starter.

You can be a very good role player and a starter. Look whole Rockets roster without Paul and Harden.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

What is Role Player?
A term that refers to a player who plays a supporting role on his team, and does it well and willingly. A role player can either be a bench player who is a solid performer in the minutes he gets, or sometimes, a starter who plays a very specific role on the team.

https://www.sportingcharts.com/dictionary/nba/role-player.aspx

Mainly a wind defender = role player.

Becomes a 3 and D Starter = Role Player

Cuz anyone can come off the bench... even all stars... lol... if the team is stacked enough.

Blazer fan Bumping this. Wondering how you Magic fans are feeling about Frazier in the limited minutes you've seen. I was pretty high on him as a bit of a Barton-esque (with less individual shot creation) 3&D role player.

What are your thoughts?

He literally has only played 11 minutes all year.

Really impossible to say.

Thought he showed some encouraging signs in the preseason, but that was a long time ago.

Of course...we saw a couple of minutes in the most recent Blazers/Magic game. Any inside scoop on how he's doing in scrimages? Blazers have had a few players that were reportedly "killing it" behind closed doors and never saw much PT.

Assuming most of you are happy to let him come along slowly...

He's really good defensively.

A Fournier supporter !

The sad thing is that Coach Clifford suggests that Fournier is out further games. Not sure if this is a personal leave.

as stated in the earlier he’s only played 11 mins. That said, I think he has good defensive fundamentals and the physical tools to be a good 3&D player. But again that’s based on summer league and 11 mins of real game action.

Not sure why he's not getting minutes over Iwundu.

He's a future star. You can have him for Lillard.
