Predict the opening night depth chart

Post#1 » by drsd » Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:02 am

With Amile Jefferson signing a deal, it looks the Magic is at the end of their roster development.

Considering these players, what do you see as the depth chart, the retired 2-way players (can be above 15-man roster).

In alphabetic order with minimum contract stated:
DJ Augustin on a 2-year deal
Mohamed Bamba on a 4-year deal *
Isaiah Briscoe on a 1-year deal *
Khem Birch on a 1-year deal
Evan Fournier on a 3-year deal
Melvin Frazier on a 2-year deal *
Aaron Gordon on a 4-year deal
Jerian Grant on a 1-year deal *
Jonathan Isaac on a 3-year deal *
Wesley Iwundu on a 1-year deal
Jarell Martin on a 1-year deal
Timofey Mozgov on a 2-year deal
Terrence Ross on a 1-year deal
Jonathon Simmons on a 2-year deal
Nikola Vučević on a 1-year deal

Troy Caupain - Two way
Amile Jefferson - Two way
Braian Angola-Rodas - exhibit 10

* = Orlando has rights to extend

..

For me the opening night depth chart is:
Augustin/Grant/Briscoe
Fournier/Ross/Iwundu
Isaac/Simmons/Frazier
Gordon/Martin/Birch
Vučević/Bamba/Mozgov

Caupain retained on a two way, and Jefferson and Angola-Rodas battle it our for the last two-way, where I project Angola-Rodas to be waived and signed by Lakeland, leaving Jefferson as the 17th Magician.

idk If they play Isaac at the 3 or 4 but I generally agree with your depth chart except that Birch will be slotted in at center while Mozgov doesn't see the light of day.

As a backup he can play either position.

I would easily predict Birch for 3rd string minutes at both front-court positions. Indeed he might log 60 games by being able to split his time.

Birch has a contract year and he need time on the court to develop his next contract.

If all front-court players are healthy all year long, will Mozgov log one-minute of playing time?

I am sceptic.

His role is to train Bamba on the practice court. And to play tough again Vučević on the practice court. If the Magic is winning games, that is a sign that Mozgov is not logging minutes.

He played about 50/50 between PF and C last year. We'll see if Clifford uses him the same way.

I will add though, Isaac will be starting after deadline and think Simmons see's more of the backup SG minutes then Ross.

A lot of you guys are very optimistic about Isaac starting from opening day. I personally see Ross as the starting 3 to start off. I hope you guys are right though.
