Most overrated superstar in NBA history

Post#1 » by pepe1991 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 3:07 pm

since it's summer and we are 2 months away from regular season let's have some fun with it.

I'm going with T Mac, Mr. 0-7 in first rounds himself.

This may be unpopular with some but I think its Karl Malone, he is way overated and should take John Stockton to dinner once a week forever.

2nd on the all time scoring list, ahead of Kobe and Jordan. Only behind Kareem. Also 7th in rebounds.

Both him and Stockton benefited from each other, in terms of pumping up, kind a unrealistic stats.
I mean 14,5 apg on 3,5 TO  and most people don't know, but he SUUUCKED with his left hand and for todays uber nerdy nba he would be super predictable and easy to guard since all his passes and all his plays were from his right hand. He was hurting whole offense and himself by picking up dribble since he never showed any interest, desire or ability to play with left hand. Look at his highlights and just laugh how many times he will force pass with right, despite left hand being better choice.

Yet, due his longjevity nobody will touch his total assists numbers any time soon.

I Didnt say Karl Malone sucked, I juat said he is overated.

2nd all time scorer and 7th in rebounds, yet how many players all time would you pick before him to start a franchise with? 30? 40? Its alot for me.

Pippen is who came to my mind. Hall of Famer and legit superstar? Yes. Absolutely. But I think several other players during that era could have played alongside MJ and they would have been just as successful. To me, you put Payton, Ewing, Malone, etc. all with Jordan and they are just as successful. I'd like to see other responses.

Gotta disagree about Stockton. He should get more credit for his endurance and longevity. Dude played 19 seasons, and in 13 of those he didn't miss a single game. He averaged 79 games a year for 19 years. Think about how rare that is these days. He also shot over 50%, including 38% from 3 for his career (granted he wasn't taking a ton, but that was the era). Sure, it helped that he had Karl Malone, any time a PG has a dominant big man his assist numbers are going to go up (as opposed to a Jordan who goes and gets many of his own shots). But his numbers are outrageous for good reason, dude was a beast.

Also Stockton definitely favored his right hand, but it's not like opposing defenses didn't know that. He was a master at baiting people into thinking he was going left (because he could) and then coming back right when your momentum was carrying you and you couldn't respond quickly enough. He was certainly capable of going left though.

Pippen is a good one, but definitely not Malone. He knew how to set his man up, text book pump fakes and post moves. Our guys need to watch film on him. The other that comes to mind is Charles Barkley. Amazing for his size, but never really a fan of his bully tactics.

What if I offered the idea that history doesn’t matter in this debate as Luka Doncic will assume this crown in the near future?

Considering people unjustly already think he’s overrated I doubt this is going to be true.

If I remember correctly didn’t Gary Payton say he was one of the hardest people he ever had to guard?

I don't think Stockton is overrated , just pointed that he was kind a predictable by todays standards. In general whenever i read old forums or listen to opinions about older people than me, who were big fans in 80s and 90s most of them think that he got more attention as a star due his longjevity and after he retired than during his career, where in 80s he was always viewed as clear second option to Malone on own team, and in debates for top 3# PG with Thomas and Magic being way better.

He has offensive rating, for career 121, that's one of highest ever.

I would not rank him as overrated superstar tho.

I’d actually lean toward Malone being underrated. He had amazing longevity and would have been just as good in today’s era.

Still think that in that generation of stars nobody choked worst than T mac.
Iverson had legit amazing , historic 2001 run, Carter few times was close ( including 2001 ), Francis stardom lasted for breath second, don't view him as superstar... T mac... 7 freaking first round exits in 7 attemps. I'll never get over it  especially after JVG called him lazy and said that if it took 10 000 hours of workouts to be hall of famer, T mac did 1000 ...

Having grown up a Knicks fan largely in the Ewing era, I can't agree with that. He was dominant for a long time, just had the misfortune of playing the same time as Jordan and Olajuwon.

If he was playing today, we'd all be talking about how a dominant center was still a must.
