Q&A with Steve Clifford

John Denton did a Q&A with Steve Clifford. Here are the highlights:
https://www.nba.com/magic/news/qa-steve-clifford-20180917

ORLANDOMAGIC.COM: With you coaching previously in Charlotte, you faced the Magic four times a year. What are your impressions of the roster as a whole?

STEVE CLIFFORD: ``Obviously, the goal you have to have in this league is improving year in and year out and you have to be well-balanced (offensively and defensively). You have to take what you have and find ways that you can be good offensively and defensively every night. The defensive part of it is more black and white where you can have those hard-and-fast rules. The offensive part, to me, you can have plans, but you have to read the situation and see what changes you need to make to develop.

``Simply put, offensively, we need to have an aspect of ball movement, playing inside-out, playing unselfishly and taking advantage of one-on-one play, a post-up game and our catch-and-shoot game. We have to be able to depend on guys who have (advantages in) matchups. On the other end, being able to switch is a bigger aspect of this game and I think we’ll be able to do that.’’

Good luck finding advantageous one-on-one matchups nightly.

ORLANDOMAGIC.COM: Let’s shift to your thoughts on some of your players and positions. I know you have said that player rotations and playing time will be decided in practice and games, but what are your initial thoughts on how you will balance the center spot with Nikola Vucevic and Mohamed Bamba?

STEVE CLIFFORD: ``One of the things that I’m hopeful of – and I don’t know if it will be this way from Day 1 – but that we will have a package of offense set to put in where they can play together some, too. I think so much of that will be dependent on whether they can play together, which I think they can. Also, it will be about how quickly Mo develops. My thinking on younger players is that you put them into roles where they can play well and that starts with minutes. Give them a role to start where they can have success and then go from there. A lot of that will play out as we get started with camp.’’

 the ghost of Frank Vogel lives!

ORLANDOMAGIC.COM: Aaron Gordon made a huge jump individually last season. What do you see for his future and where can he make the biggest strides?

STEVE CLIFFORD: ``I think, as much as everything, he’s made a jump every year offensively. Now, it’s about purpose of play on the offensive end. He can put up similar numbers or even better with increased efficiency. But to me, the biggest things that I have been talking to him about are his defense and rebounding. This league is so much about having two-way players and I told him that if he wants to be considered an all-star level player you are going to impress more coaches and basketball people by becoming the defender that you can be. If he’s first or second-team All-Defense with 19 (points) and 9 (rebounds), he’s going to become an all-star. To me, that’s where it all starts for him. He’s a capable guy and that’s been my message to him every time that we’ve talked.’’

Pretty fair assessment.

ORLANDOMAGIC.COM: You’ve gotten to see Mo Bamba play in Summer League and in some of the pre-camp workouts. How much of a load will he be ready for early in the season and how much of a chance to does have to be special in this league?

STEVE CLIFFORD: ``I certainly wouldn’t put any limits on who he can become, but I just hope that right now people are fair with him. He’s younger and physically he’s still developing. He’s worked hard this summer and since summer league he’s come in here every day and he’s gotten a lot stronger. He’s so easy to deal with and I’m so excited about working with him going forward.’’

Translation: temper those expectations.

ORLANDOMAGIC.COM: What are your goals for this season? What can make this season a success? Do you talk playoffs with this team from the start or is that too far down the line to even discuss at this juncture?

STEVE CLIFFORD: ``What I hope this team is thinking right now is training camp. We need a good training camp to get ready for the season. I think we’ve had a good offseason and most of these guys are in good shape and they’ve put a lot into it already. Training camp is all about getting ready for the games. We’ve got like five weeks now before we get started with (regular-season) games, so I hope that’s what we’re focused on for now.’’

Translation: throw ice water on those expectations

ORLANDOMAGIC.COM: You put a big emphasis on developing forward Jonathan Isaac in Summer League and he responded with some strong play. Like Bamba, how much of a load are you willing to put on him early in his second season and do you see signs of him being a special player for this organization?

STEVE CLIFFORD: ``I think he’s had a really terrific offseason. All the work that he did last year while developing his body and skill level gave him a level of confidence. Then, I think Summer League was great for him and he’s spent a lot of time with (Magic assistant coaches) Pat Delany and Bruce Kreutzer working on his skill level and his range shooting. I think people will see his development this year.

``I think he’s still just starting with where he can be, but he’s worked really hard and he’s playing with a lot of confidence right now.’’

I really hope Isaac develops as a shooter.

No shades of Vogel to me. Vogel was running around screaming “playoffs” and Clifford is saying “nah” plus talking about Vuc out there with Mo now and then, which he needs to do to keep Vuc feeling like he’s a big part of the team.

Clifford likes those big lineups, but I think he will put Mo and Vuc together now and then just to get Mo shooting some 3s and defending some smaller guys. It’s good practice for him. I doubt we see them log much more than 5 mins a game together anyway.

Reality is that we need Vuc here until Mo is ready to give us 25-30 mins a game.

He wants to replicate the amazing success he had playing 2 C's together in Charlotte

Can't wait to play "inside out" with Vuc. Vuc's idea of "inside" is about 20 feet from the rim

He just wants to get bamba shooting 3s and getting used to guarding smaller guys for switching. Doubt it happens more than 5 mins a game. And even if it does, i thought we all expected to tank this season anyway. You expecting a playoff push?

You sarcastically brought up success. So i would imagine thats what you are looking for this season. I personally want to see bamba on the floor as much as possible. So if he gets an extra 5 mins as a pf now and then, thats fine with me.

Besides, having them together is better for team success than forcing them to fight each other for playing time. They should at least be able to not get in each other’s way. Best case scenario, ditching our previous medical staff helps Vuc’s fitness return to where he’s comfortable attacking in the post again. (At which point he becomes a lot more valuable.)

Yeah... we're looking to add another top draft pick (preferably a pg/sg) to this before talking about team goals.

Vuc will pass to Bamba out of the post. AG, Harris, Dipo, Elf bricked those wide open threes early in their careers, so hopefully Bamba will be different.

I LOVE the Bamba pick but this is a recipe for disaster. So we're going to have Vuc in the paint and one of the longest players ever drafted standing 25 feet out just watching and hoping for a pass? Talk about a clunky and slow-paced offense.

What is he supposed to do though? This is what the GM has given him.

It's funny that the only reason we would even have to play Bamba next to Vuc is due to the fact that Vuc is still on this roster. I like Birch. I really don't see why we couldn't have made the Biz trade, Traded Vuc, and then just gave Khem the starting spot until Bamba looked ready to take over. Im really ready to just embrace the youth movement and rid ourselves of some of the tenured players from the previous regime.

We could have even showcased Birch for a potential trade. I think he is a legitimate NBA player and has a defensive skill set that is valued in today's NBA.

They’ll also have Bamba get lobs off of cuts and pick-and-roll actions, and if Vuc is on the floor Bamba will be guarded by power forwards, which will get him post-up opportunities. And shooting bigs will spread the floor for Isaac and Gordon to operate in the post as well.

Learning how to stretch the floor and shoot threes is pretty important for his development... and he doesn't have to wait for his body to mature to do it. Let's also not forget he got gassed in summer league... spending time on the perimeter might do him some good in terms of staying on the floor and not getting injured due to fatigue his rookie year. With Vuc being able to step out it doesn't have to be Bamba's only role either... he's still going to run the floor, get in some PnRs, and post up smaller bigs. It'll be fine... we're talking about a handful of minutes per game.

So Vuc and Bamba together will be a thing?

Image

Can't wait to see longest player in nba in last 30 years standing 27 foot away from rim shooting 3s ,after shooting 27% at college, that really will be maximizing his potential

Magic have like " how to ruin everything book" and every time they make one good move, they rush to that book to find another tip how to ruin it.

So with them taking PF-C spot ,what will Isaac and Gordon play? Guards ?

I can't even...

No, but I assume the coach of the team is looking for success. That is the reason I brought it up.

Personally, I'm just sick of watching the lazy and soft Vucevic on my team.

I wouldnt be oppose to seeing Bamba play the stretch 4/5 this year as long as he gets a lot of minutes. I dont really think he is currently built to bang bodies against these NBA guys anyways. So whatever gets him the most burn. Its not like we’re competing for the playoffs anyway.

Just get him some burn and get him out of harms way. Slowly get him acclimated to the NBA game.

I like the idea of Vuc down low (where just a few years ago he looked like an All-Star) but I do NOT want to teach Bamba to hang on the perimeter and develop into Kyle Korver. Bamba has to learn to bang, crash, roll, and dunk. Vucevic may be able to reclaim some trade value by showcasing his high %, fundamentally sound low post game again. By trade deadline, Bamba ready to take over and Vuc ready to contribute to a playoff team, as part of a package.

The "square peg in a round hole" coaching of the last few years has made talented players look their worst (until they leave). IF there's no place in Clifford's offense for a low post torture-chamber, then Vuc can't contribute (so be it). If our center is just going to shoot threes, then might as well go with Bamba, who can probably compare evenly with Vuc from the perimeter pretty quickly.
