This should please many fans here who utilize Statistics to justify player rankings and future abilities.
https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/252765/Magic-Become-First-NBA-Team-To-Use-AI-Player-Tracking-Data“When we saw the power of AutoSTATS, we were immediately drawn to the benefits this data can provide in our draft decision making process,” said Jeff Weltman, President of Basketball Operations for the Orlando Magic. “Now, instead of using data from just a handful of games, we will be able to make our draft decisions with data from every collegiate game a potential draft pick has played.”

Can't argue with at least trying it out so long as they scrutinize it. Interesting that they agreed to an exclusive deal.
Curious what makes it "AI" though and not just comprehensive statistics.

My fellow Maths / Data Science nerds should applaud this.
Hopefully they understand that these tools should be considered a flashlight which simply lights the way to further exploration. This isn’t to be used as the end of traditional scouting.

How much do teams care about stats?.. Teams will steal doctorate statisticians with years of experience and success, pay for access in many statistical databases, construct in-house advanced statistics, and pay for in-venue data tracking..
If this AI tracking is even 85% as accurate as in-venue hardware tracking, the amount of exclusive information that ORL has just gathered is astronomical, and not even in a sense that it's too much too handle. It'll really just pinpoint in on what each big board prospect can really do. This screams Asst. GM Matt Lloyd to me.. and Mr. Burns did the evil twitch thing hearing about it
Am I overreacting when I say we will get the next big draft steal that shows itself 20 games into the next season?

Based on the name “
AutoStats,” I would assume it is simply some form of unsupervised learning.

This is most likely an additional tool. Not the end tool in scouting. Because, no statistical analysis can show how a player reacts under pressure or shoot or make quick decisions with a hand in his face from a good defender when the game is on the line.

I wonder if this means we will draft a sound statistical player or another project?

I think this will be the greatest help in picking mid to late 1st rounders and 2nd round draft picks.

yes. teams have been using data for years, this sounds like Orlando just catching up.
also, will the AI know if a player was sick for a game on some random thursday night and thats why he shot 4-18? or that his team was decimated by injuries and he played thru an injury, which caused stats to be lower than normal, but they needed him to play? or play out of position because the team needed it. this is just one thing in a big bucket of things for scouts/teams to look at.

thats why i said you need more than just the AI input.

So if they tell a prospect you scored high on AUTOSTATS, That player starts to feel pressure and/or what if I don't live up to expectations
Or they tell a prospect you scored low on AUTOSTATS, That player probably going to feel like I am going to be a bust or maybe they feel like I have a lot of work to do to try to improve but the odds are stacked against me.
I wonder how former draft picks of the Magic have scored on AUTOSTATS and what are the scores from AUTOSTATS on the upcoming draft class? Some examples of this year's draft prospects I like to know how they score from AUTOSTATS ( Jarrett Culver, Nasir Little, Deandre Hunter, Bol Bol, Tre Jones, TY Jerome, Eric Paschall, PJ Washington)

Machine learning is a sub field in AI. It holds great promise to finding correlations that cannot be seen otherwise. (The computer does not "care" why X is related to Y; it just detects that they are).
For example: Machine Learning might view Aaron Gordon as the key player to the Raptors win. We would all be baffled as to why.
Believing in this emergent correlations in Machine Learning takes the next leap: accepting causality. Gordon might correlate with Magic wins, but is he causal? This is why this approach can only be one tool.
