I hate to use them on good sites this but this is exactly why ad-blockers were developed.

I got zero adware issues or popups. Just use Firefox, go into about.config to disable all flash, then use adblocker. Smoothest, fastest way to browse internet.

I do most of my browsing nowadays with chrome for android, which doesn't support any extensions such as adblockers. Since I've made the switch to mobile, I've been completely appalled at the intrusive, browser takeover type of ads that realgm employs. All these years I never knew I was supporting such a scummy website. It's enough to make me think that I wont be visiting this site for much longer, just out of principle.

Ok I’m not the only one. That’s why I use this outdated app.

To be fair, the takeover ads you speak of are not employed by RealGM. These types of ads sit in legit ad networks and become a nuisance. That said, there are steps RealGM could take to combat them, but I don't know how they do their realtime bidding.

I had this issue on my site last year and it took about a month to solve and some serious investment by my ad serving network.

These types of takeovers can even be geotagged down to the city you live in. For example, one day they'll only appear for someone in Houston. They can also target specific browsers, Safari being the worst. This makes them quite difficult to track down if you don't put forth the effort to stop them.

I assure you that they don't make any money on these popups/takeovers since they're outside the scope of what the network is serving. It's generally really low paying cpm ads with the malicious code.

While Xenforo is awesome, that wouldn't solve the ad problem.

If you browse this site on chrome for iphone or ipad, most of those ad blockers don't work. It's a massive headache. More frustrating than Playoff Vucevic.

I built a forum (17k users) with Xenforo 2.0 just four months ago.
Loaded it up with tons of add-ons.
And have been 100% satisfied.
Best $170 we ever spent on our website.

This forum software does kinda suck.
But the people and content here are great.

Thank you for making this post. It is absolutely ridiculous. I can barely ever use the site on mobile, because I have some stupid popup saying my computer has a virus and unable to close, unless i restart my browser. Why would such a large company like realgm need to employ such scummy tactics. You don't generate enough revenue off ads? Jesus, leave that to the porn sites, we are just trying to read about sports here.

I don't browse internet much on Phone but when I do, I use Dolphin Browser. RealGM hasn't shown any adware so far using that. Not sure why.

The browser has to be targetted

I know within Firefox, one can fine tune the browsing. I have turned off any audio/video autoplay as well as shutting down all flash on all webpages. I also use a ad-blocker on top of that. Once I did that, I get super quick browsing with no adware. If I want to browse flash friendly sites or watch videos, I use Chrome. But, for phone, I haven't had problems with Dolphin as far as AdWare and I haven't used any ad-blocker. But, I only use internet on Phone to look up things, rarely for recreation. Yet, hadn't had any problems with RealGM. What I think has happened is peoples phones or computers already have adware software infiltrated on their phones/pc's. Hence, that is why it won't go away. Once it gets on there, it is hard to remove without going into the Registry etc or doing a system restore to a time before your PC got the adware. And for phones, that would be like rooting your phone back to default in most cases.

I get zero ads on RealGM, or any other site I visit. Here is my formula

Firefox with the following extensions:
uBlock Origin
uMatrix

I have a similar setup with Firefox on my phone.

And then on my PC itself, I just run Windows Defender and Malwarebytes(free version).

Have never encountered any issues of any sort. Super clean browsing experience.
