Timofey Mozgov

I never was a big fan, and I can't wait until his contract expires or we trade him for cap space (hoping we do not stretch his contract), but sometimes I wonder if he would have been useful against Gasol in the playoffs. So my question, is he worth keeping as a 3rd string center if healthy, or naw?

No.

Mozgov has everything to prove. But he will be the 3rd stringer next year. Short of a massive injury to either Vučević or Bamba, he is looking at clean-up minutes. Say 30 games played at a 8 mpg average.

Mozgov will make a good human victory cigar.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say Mozgov doesn't play a single minute for the Magic this season. I'm not even confident he'll be on the roster.

I think there's a good chance he's bought out, stretched or traded before the season starts.

Mozgov is on stretch watch.

At best, he is the third center but I think Aminu or even Issac would play ahead of him.

I do not want to see him stretched though.

One possible trade I've identified is dealing him and cash to Washington for Ian Mahinmi which would save The Magic a million and let them grab a player for the minimum.

I'd love Birch back but do you want to pay another big?

Regardless, I do not want to see Mozgov stretched just to fill out the roster as he'd be on the cap for two more years after this.

I agree with pieces of a few comments here.

Knightro: I expect Mozgov to play zero minutes this year.

Howard: I do NOT want to see Mozgov stretched.

We have a lot of young assets to see grow while also being a playoff candidate. Mozgov’s deal gives us the opportunity to be more aggressive next summer if we are patient ... which we have every reason to be.

It's dumb to stretch him. We don't need his contract on the books when we become buyers in 2020/2021.

He can easily be dealt by the trade deadline if we're looking for a nice piece to add to our squad.

I'm very curious to see if Mozgov plays for Russia at the FIBA World Cup. Hopefully the procedures and the rest of done him well. He's awesome on the bench and in the locker room, and he's more than capable of being a great 3rd center.

Just waived? Or stretched too?

TBD.

I assume they've stretched him so they can resign Birch and stay under the luxury tax, but we'll see.

It seems an odd move. I would've hung onto that contract just in case it was needed as filler or had some value as an expiring contract at the deadline. It's a sunk cost now. I guess this means they want to do something with that roster slot.

why stretch him when we could of just let him expire next year and not hurt future cap space for the next few years? Or better yet use his expiring as trade bait

I really dont get this

This is simply for the roster spot, nothing more to see.

I really hope this means we’re resigning Birch.

The Magic do not under any circumstances want to pay the luxury tax for a team that has no chance to win the NBA title.

Stretching Mozgov ensures they will not be a tax team this year.

Not paying the tax also gives them the full MLE next summer to use in free agency instead of the taxpayer MLE.

It's not.

The Magic even with Mozgov had an open roster spot to bring on a 15th player.

This is 100% about avoiding the luxury tax.

Makes sense, so Birch is resigning?

The Magic only have two centers on the roster right now in Vucevic and Bamba, so it would make sense to add another.

They do, as you pointed out, have two roster spots open now.

G: Augustin, Carter-Williams, Fultz
G: Fournier, Ross, Frazier Jr.
F: Gordon, Iwundu
F: Isaac, Aminu, Okeke
C: Vucevic, Bamba

Birch would be spot 14 and they'd have one more spot open for another minimum signing.
