Magic sign C Isaac Humphries to an Exhibit 10 contract

Post#1 » by Knightro » Wed Jul 24, 2019 1:12 pm

Humphries will attend Orlando Magic training camp and almost certainly be waived before the regular season begins. Then he'll be designated to the Magic’s NBA G-League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic. If Humphries spends 60 days with the G-League club, then he’ll receive a $50,000 bonus in addition to his G-League salary.

Looks like a good Lakeland addition and another camp spot filled.

Thank you for making this thread. You are off to a great start in the Moderator Role.

A little more on Isaac Humphries.

-21 year old Australian PF/C
-Measured 7'0 1/4th" in shoes, 260 lbs with a 7'0" wingspan in college
-Played two very nondescript years at Kentucky, but declared for the draft anyway and wasn't drafted in 2017
-Averaged 6.9 PPG, 3.6 RPG and 1.0 BPG while shooting 58% in 16 MPG over 26 appearances in the NBL in 17-18.
-Came back to the U.S. and signed a camp deal with the Atlanta Hawks who waived him and then assigned him to their G-League team in 2018.
-Averaged 11.3 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.0 BPG while shooting .538/.337/.662 in 21.8 MPG over 46 appearances in the G-League in 18-19.
-Hawks called him up to the NBA in April and he played in 5 games down the stretch.

I’m extremely disappointed in the lack of “what!!!? We signed another big man!!??” posts in this thread.

Give the kid a go. He's an Aussie and he will work his arse off at landing a spot on our roster.

If all goes well, we might finally have our replacement for Greg Kite.

or a G-League stand-in version of him...one that allows the key guys in Lakeland (the ones that they are really focusing on developing) to get reps playing with a similar style big in a similar system format.

I see this very similar to Magette signing...a player primarily acquired as a development tool for their G-League to NBA strategy.

This is a good write up. Be interesting to see what happens with Okeke.

Humphries looked very promising as a junior, in the 2014 u17 WC he averaged 19/11 with 3.3 bpg, including 41 and 19 with 5 blocks against Canada. So he was on the map early as an Australian prospect.

He's decently fluid as a 7 footer and he has very nice touch, but he's not much of an 'athlete', he's pretty grounded, not super long, etc.

Since going undrafted, he spent a solid year in the NBL (Aus league) and won ROY, he had a bad coach who probably mis/underutilized him though.

Since then, he's been working on expanding his range and getting in optimal shape. I don't think he's quite proven himself as a shooter just yet but the form is pretty solid and his great touch would be an encouraging indicator for shooting growth potential. Still has a long way to go though - hasn't cracked 70% FT yet and shot 33% from 3 in the G-League last season.

I haven't watched enough full games to make a fair comment on his defense, though I do find him to be a little soft, generally speaking.

His best showing was probably the G-League showcase where he scored 32 points.

I think there's Australian players that are better than him, but I think Isaac's getting a few of these NBA opportunities because of his youth and pedigree. This is reflected by the fact that other Australian bigs without NBA experience get gigs in the national team over him. He played a handful of minutes for Atlanta last season and this season, I think practicing with the Magic squad will be invaluable experience and hopefully help him grow as a player, because he is still young.

But as of right now, I think he'd be liability on an NBA court, so don't expect him playing any minutes for you guys, especially with the big depth you already have.

Great info.

At only 21 years old, he's basically like a draft pick even though he's already two years removed from college.

There's certainly no harm in sending him to the G-League to see if he can continue to expand his range and grow his skill set.

One thing organizations like Toronto have done remarkably well that I would really love to emulate here in Orlando is turning their G-League team into a real developmental system.

It's very difficult to balance "we're trying to fight for and make the playoffs" with "we want to develop young talent" at the NBA level. Usually it's one or the other.

When teams are in "we're trying to fight for and make the playoffs" mode, then the G-League becomes even more important IMO. You always want to try and find ways to fill out the bottom or back half of a rotation with cost-controlled players that can actually play.
