I believe this to be true.

Given how The Magic are up against the Luxury Tax, one possibility would be if DaQuan Jeffries were to beat out Melvin Frazier Jr., The Magic could probably easily move him with cash attached in a salary dump.

I love this mindset from Jeffries...he had already signed a deal back in June; so he turned down converting that (with exhibit 10) into a 2-Way G-League deal and instead he's going for a real NBA roster spot.

NBA teams can sign as many players as they want for the league minimum no matter how far over the salary cap they are.*

Frazier has guaranteed money this year. If the Magic waive him, his salary this season will still count towards their cap - wether as full amount ($1.4m) or stretched (3y/$0.47m).

The Magic also don't need to clear a roster spot to sign Jeffries as they still have their 14th and 15th roster spots open, though one is likely for Okeke.

When an NBA team uses their bi-annual exception, acquires a player via sign-and-trade, or uses more than the taxpayer portion of the mid-level exception, that club will face a hard cap for the remainder of the league year.

In this case, the Magic used the full non-taxpayer MLE on Al-Farouq Aminu in free agency. Therefore they have a have hard cap of $138,928,000 that they are not permitted to go over at any point in 2019-2020.

The good news is that even after all of their signings, the Magic are sitting at just $131,954,559.

So the hard cap isn't really an issue at all unless the Magic tried to make a couple of trades where they brought back more money than they sent out.

Okeke could also sign for this year at 80% or 100% of the rookie scale and the Magic could stay under the tax.

If he signs for 120% (which 99% of prospects do), then the luxury tax would come into play.

So I'm confused, is he going to officially be in training camp? Or is it possible that another team could swipe him from under us?

Can someone break down in laymen terms what are the benefits of turning down a guaranteed 2 way contract for a potential min. contract/roster spot on the actual team?

Is it a pride thing or are there actual other implications such as salary/opportunity etc?

• The Salary Cap is a spending threshold (dictated by league revenue) that teams can exceeded with exceptions and Bird Rights.

• The Luxury Tax is a spending threshold (higher than the Salary Cap) that teams can exceed, but they get penalized for crossing.

• The Luxury Tax Apron is a spending threshold (higher than the Luxury Tax) that teams can exceed, but they get more severe penalties for crossing.

Its about the opportunity to make an NBA 15 man roster.

A 2-way contract is essentially a 1+1 G-League contract. By signing a 2-Way contract, the team owns his rights for that year AND have the option to keep his rights for a second year. So he could be locked under contract to that team for two years unless they release his rights.

There is some $ security, plus the players automatically get up to 45 days of NBA time (practice or game). But they also risk being buried in the G-L for two years with a team without a roster spot/role to give them on their NBA roster.

By declining to sign a 2 Way, Jeffries can still attend the Magic training camp and try out for the Magic's regular NBA roster. BUT, even if he makes the Magic and is offered a roster spot and an NBA contract, he can still sign with another team with a better opportunity for him.

Shams Charania's tweet didn't specify what type of free agent deal he signed.

I don't think Shams would report on a "summer league only" deal. It sounds to me like he signed a "Summer" contract which covers from Summer League through training camp, they usually end a week before the NBA season starts.

I think he'll be at training camp, but that's just a guess.
