The tweet is worded poorly IMO. At least I hope it is.

Redshirting to me means they're not going to sign him until next year and not essentially burn the first year of his rookie contract on a rehab year.

But Shams mentions Okeke getting his salary. So we'll see.

Keith and I on the same page here.

If they are signing him, then they're basically announcing he's out for the season in September which doesn't make a lot of sense.

Ngl I am a bit confused and not that knowledgeable on all the contract details, but do we now have a roster spot open if needed or has Okeke took that spot?

So he will go a year without being paid?

Really hate to be that guy but again it feels like picking NAW would have achieved both of those things. He could have helped now.

Correct.

Okeke will be under NBA contract the following years...

20-21
21-22
22-23 (team option)
23-24 (team option)

He'll probably sign a G-League deal with Lakeland to get a little cash (like 50K) while he rehabs.

Thanks, I was wondering what we'd do for him this season to get him a few quid.

This move helps The Magic in terms of roster flexibility and essentially allows them to have Chuma Okeke under contract for 5 years instead of 4.

With the extra roster spot, The Magic can sign a combo guard who can play point guard/backup Augustin/MCW in case things don't work out with Markelle Fultz health wise/he needs more time.

I understand why they did it. But has this ever happened before with a 1st round draft pick? Why pick him if this was the idea all along? So what happens if he has another major Injury while he is rehabbing? This is a bit if a risky move in my eyes.

Couldn't have this been accomplished by just taking him in the second round? Or just drafting a player that could potentially contribute now like some of the tweets are saying?. This is a bit of a head scratcher

I don't understand why Okeke would agree to this.
What is the upside for him?

The most comparable example would be the Thunder drafting Josh Huestis in the 1st round in 2014 and then mutually agreeing to stash him in the G-League for his rookie season.

That one isn't totally comparable though as Huestis wasn't rehabbing an injury, he was just not that good of a player and needed the additional developmental time.

Why would Okeke agree to this? Sounds like a great less of getting paid.

The upside for Okeke is that by delaying his contract for a year he gets to sign his rookie contract under the 2020 rookie scale rather than the 2019 rookie scale which is going to be increased as the cap will be going up.

I haven't done the math completely, but Okeke will end up making at least EDIT: I overshot it originally 1.1M more million over the life of the four year contract.

Even thought they're not legally allowed to per NBA rules, I'm guessing the Magic also wink-wink told his agent that they'll sign him in the summer of 2020 even if he suffers another catastrophic injury.

I assume he'll also be taking out a massive insurance policy on himself.
