Official "Nickeil Alexander-Walker isn't on the Magic" rant thread

Whether he should be or shouldn’t be, Nickeil Alexander-Walker is not a member of the Orlando Magic.

I certainly don’t want to censor anyone from what they want to talk about on this board on a daily basis, but it is a little unfair to the people who don’t really care to discuss NAW and the Magic’s decision to pass on him in the 2019 draft to see that topic crop up repeatedly in other threads. Specifically GameDay threads that are supposed to be discussions about what’s happening in that game and not turn into an argument about how stupid the front office is for the pick they made.

If you love NAW, this is the place for you!

If you hate NAW, this is also the place for you!

Post highlights. Post lowlights. Post Chuma Okeke rehab videos. Post Fournier and Augustin missing shots. Post whatever you want about NAW and the Magic's decision to pass on him. Just post it here.

Have fun.

I, for one, am glad we have an injured 3&D forward on our bench who fits us much better than a guard who can shoot/create.

Yeah man, there just wasn't any minutes for him on this team. Fournier is just too good and we are loaded at point guard already. How could Weham have passed up the chance to draft an injured second-rounder with the same skillset as our other forwards at 16 anyways?

I for one am excited to watch him in a year when he struggles to find minutes over Isaac/AG/Aminu.

Dude. Stop. Totally different situations.... because of *checks notes* umm... well. Did I mention a GM after us called and said if we didn't take Chuma he was going to?

Pretty sure Orlando already had an agreement in place for chuma to redshirt, maybe assuming NAW wouldn't fall that far?

I know I wanted him and thought he wasn't going to fall to us. We didn't pick him, so I'm a Chuma fan now.

I got to say, I did not think NAW was this good.

It's early but this kid might be a star.

When I started to see NAW mocked to us before the draft from several websites, I started to look at his highlights, read his scouting report, and read what you all that wanted him had to say. I was influenced then that he would be the right choice for the team. When the Magic passed on him and went Chuma instead, I did not necessarily get mad because my college basketball knowledge is very minor (mainly due to not watching it at all till the tournament). I can see why people want NAW here and were furious about it but at the same time, we need to actually see Chuma Okeke on the court to truly see if we made a mistake or not. My take on it is that the Magic brass feel that Chuma has much higher upside than NAW along with the fact that maybe NAW would not agree to a red-shirting to avoid paying luxury tax money.

NAW has certainly played well in Summer League and in the preseason, but I want to see how he fares in the regular season to get an exact analysis on his play at the next level.

I’ll enjoy checking back on this thread as the season progresses and Chuma comes back struggling to get minutes behind the 3-4 other Forwards on this team.

I'm still waiting one more summer to finish rating our ORL FO, but yes, that rosy view of an "A" rated FO might become just another one of the many "B" rated FO's out there after July, 2020. Or more likely, an above average "B+" FO at that time.

Hennigan might end up with the better draft record, but he also had better draft spots than WeHam. What sucks for Hennigan was also having one or two "C-" rated moments like trading away Tobias and Oladipo, holding onto Elfrid so long (after he just kept worsening and worsening after his stellar rookie year), and passing up on one or two draft names and trades he probably could of had.

One thing I'll genuinely rave about with the WeHam FO is they don't seem to be the types to have that one, bad, too-costly "C-" moment that another FO might have from time to time. Not with Weltman here, in particular. There's also like, again, 4-5 former GM's (and all the scouts/analysts) in our own FO, another supporting reason for our FO to probably never make any too-costly mistakes and have higher chances than most other FO's at hitting consistent single runs and double runs.

WeHam, as in Hammond, is the one or two who seem to be genuinely hunting homeruns too; JI as the copy/paste form of KD's base, and lengthy draft picks who are one level away from reaching Giannis-type impact, Fultz as a low-risk All Star within a few years, always drafting for BPA over need. It's a sign of the environment in how hard it is to get quality, break-it-down guard play when it's been two FO's in ORL who still haven't addressed this need. But at the same time; WeHam is starting to wiff out on some big draft picks, particularly with the Bamba and Okeke one, even though those two will probably end up as "double runs." I'm that high on Okeke. My most damning wiff is the Doncic draft, because a lot of our board saw him AT WORST the floor of our Hedo Turkoglu's prime (exactly what we needed), the Euro data on him as damning as a "homerun hit", and he had a lot of marketability. And it's even more perplexing because if WeHam are big on flipping draft picks away so often in trades, red-shirt years, and "flattening outs", then why not just send a bunch of picks away for the one player you know is a "triple run" or "homerun" (aka, getting Doncic with outgoing picks mainly).

Hopefully this "double-hitting" FO can find a way to make it work for us, somehow. Our city is used to the Magic not just being in the playoffs in the years that they are, but usually as a +.500 post-season, ECF and title threat of a team, too.

This fo is more of being conservative and going for the same side instead. Perhaps the biggest risk they ever took was fultz. And even that didnt even cost a lot.

I like naw. I was intrigued at the possibility of having him here. But it is what it is. I’ll save my judgment until i see chuma play next year. Right now, whatever naw does on the court, it will always be better than chuma who has nothing to show which really isnt fair for him either.

At the very least, having him would make it easier for us to let go or potentially include Evan in a trade. We will have to see Chuma in a year to really know but no doubt NAW has the skills of a valuable NBA player.

then you do other roster moves. Its not like Chuma redshirting saved Orlando even $5 million. think we are talking something like $3mil.

plenty of us were trumpeting him before the draft and that night. He plays defense, can shoot and pass. There is a place for him in the league.

My biggest problem, the team needed improvement on the wings and PG for the past few years. And when the BPA and a great fit was in front of the team, they drafted a hurt player that will sit behind AG and Isaac for the foreseeable future. They have tried to band-aid the PG situation (Jerian Grant, flyer on Fultz) and used 2nd round picks on PF's that we know are not going to see time at that position outside of Summer league.

The front office hasnt given out horrible contracts, and the Clifford hire has looked good so far for 1 year, but if i were grading them, it would be in the C+/B- range. more towards the C range.

Ya, the NAW pick was ridiculously obvious..was thinking, well they must know something we don't... nope... NAW still turns out to be exactly what we needed.
