It surprises me that these measures are only happening now. Maybe it's because Australians are much exposed and accustomed to FIFO work (fly in, fly out remote work) for mining and the like, but it doesn't seem like too much of an ask for places to quarantine their business and their willing employees and keep their operations happening in complete isolation from the outside world. Just to ensure things like power, water, etc don't go down.
For example, aged care facilities should have universally gone into modes like that to reduce traffic and spread from the outside world. If you have to, set up special meeting rooms for family and friends divided by a clear plastic sheet so people can still stay in communication, just not touching common property.
I'm not sure if they are only happening now, I didn't ask, but I only found out today. Hopefully protocols kicked in earlier. I know our Navy has stayed out to sea in some cases, and I'm sure other measures are in similar effect. That's why I wish our military personnel were controlling and planning this thing. Generals don't take a dump without a plan, yes that was a take from Hunt for Red October. Meanwhile, we thought we got our second case in our county. It turns out it was a dubious claim, and our numbers were cut in half with that false report. That's why there needs to be thresholds for certain levels of actions as well, got to time the wave properly. Clamping down too tight too soon can cause issues as well. The real issue is when the state and local conflict, like Mississippi and Florida. City and state are at odds in some cases.
I wish they would crack down on domestic travel. My state hasn't been hard hit as of yet, but just about every new case is coming in from outside. We could conceivably continue to operate as usual, but the lack of restrictions on travel and the limited testing is making it an inevitability that it is going to break out here at some point. Travel into and out of the hot spots should've stopped a while ago. Everyone leaving New York, for instance, should be required to serve a quarantine period of 14 days before they are allowed to depart. The laissez-faire approach to dealing with this is beyond stupid and we are going to continue to see new hot spots popping up all over the country.
The travel bans all feel like show in hindsight. Almost every report Ive heard about bans/restrictions coming into place and people being checked, tested and having to self quarantine upon arrival were rarely enforced. There are so many videos of people walking through check points with no one there to screen them, and if they were all they would say is "make sure you self quarantine for 2 weeks!". How many people are going to ignore that direction when they feel fine?
In Sydney there is uproar at the moment because a cruise ship was allowed to unload their passengers here, and they were supposed to self quarantine. Videos have come out of the passengers leaving the ship and the captain is announcing over the PA that they
don't have to quarantine. That cruise ship was responsible for the bulk of infections spreading through Sydney.
I don't mind Trump wanting to get the system and economy running again, but if you want to do that in the face of countless medical advisors recommending against that, then you need a strong plan and you need to enforce it strictly. So many countries have had leaders asleep at the wheel who have been passive, dismissive and downright neglectful. That's not leadership, that's more like reactionship.
