Why WeHam hasn't used the Injury Exception?

Simple question, we got approved for an injured player exception, we have injured players, so why haven't we signed anyone yet?

Who do you like that's out there?

Also, maybe keeping that slot available gives some flexibility in taking back two for one, etc...which might be handy if we're targeting picks and/or prospects for our higher paid players in AG and Evan. Just one reasonable scenario.

My understanding is that the Magic applied for it to give themselves options. The exception could be used to sign someone to a one-year deal. But, it could also be used to acquire a player on the last year of their deal via trade. Maybe the Magic use the exception to absorb a slightly larger contract in a trade that is expiring. Or, maybe they don't use it at all. Regardless, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

This link gives a lot more insight into the exception and how it can be applied: https://cbabreakdown.com/salary-cap-exceptions#:~:text=A%20team%20may%20use%20the,Taxpayer%20Mid%2DLevel%20Salary%20Exception.

Who would you sign?

Ennis is back tonight and Fournier is also back either tonight or by the end the week. So the Magic have 13 healthy bodies including their two-way guys.

I don't think the Magic are going to sign a guy and go into the luxury tax for what amounts to bottom of the roster filler. The juice isn't worth the financial squeeze to add a 14th or 15th caliber player.

If I am not mistaken it can only be used to sign a player or trade for 1 player in the last year of his deal, but can't be used in any package.

The cynical answer? Because they don't do anything other than the bare minimum

The real answer? Does it matter?

They'll probably save it until after the trade deadline when players get dropped and maybe try snag either a veteran (MCW/Ennis) or young guy who might have more to show (Clark/Bacon). That seems to be how they operate.

Throw a 2nd at DSJ as a reclamation project

Indeed the team must have a 3rd PG.

The answer is the salary cap and the luxury threshold. The Magic is allowed to sign more players with Isaac (and certainly now Fultz), but both the old and new salaries have a cap hit. That is why it is fairly likely the Magic will sign a one year, LLE deal. It is limited on the size of the cap hit without regard to the player's actual salary. OR: the Magic trade for a new PG so that there is no new salary. Say Ennis and a 2nd-round pick for Dennis Smith; that kind of deal.

The Magic does not have 5M available to sign a player, even if allowed in the injury exception.

What the Magic really need is a Jonathon Simmons-type to trade for a Markelle Fultz-type. That sort of theft would really help this team!
(( Luckily the Magic exactly has that in Aminu; maybe Orlando can trade him for Elfrid Payton ! ))

I don't think DS JR fits under our Disabled play Exemption. He makes 5.6M

Jerian Grant......psyche

There is Courtney Lee, Evan Turner, Shabazz Napier, the guys I would look at. The PG list is dreadful.
