About this rebuild…

After watching the game last night, what are your thoughts about a total rebuild? Get rid of all the Veterans, especially the ones who can’t even play because of injury, and fill the roster with the potential talent that we used last night.
Build a deep team with young talented players, that can all grow and stay together. I bet they would all be happy to take minimum contracts.
I mean, what a waste. We signed players who haven’t even been able to play a single game yet.
They all have to get healthy and then get back in game shape. And they still get paid! That sounds like a job I want.
I’m just rambling here, what are your thoughts?

We are in a total rebuild, a couple young guys on long term deals, and the vets on contracts that are assets to be moved.
This is the biggest rebuild the franchise has ever committed to and is at least 3 years away from competing for the play in

2nd biggest...that pre-Heart & Hustle teardown was unbelievable...From June 1999 to the February trade deadline in 2000, general manager John Gabriel made 37 transactions, involving 38 different players. There were so many guys in and out that likely never got a uniform, like Chauncey Billups...RealGMer's dream-the boards would be electric today.

A total rebuild, getting rid of veterans is a treacherous path to take.
You need the veterans to guide them, similar to students having teachers.
This is more of a hot take after the guys showing last night.
But truth is, only one or maybe even none of this gleague players will ever turn out to be a rotational NBA player.

1 - cant build a deep team without vets
2 - cant have all youngsters, you eventually have to pay them. and some will want to leave for more spotlight
3 - after trading away Vuc, AG and Evan, we are in a total rebuild.

What do you think we are currently doing??
Only vets besides ross that are getting big minutes are doing so because of injuries (and ross and maybe harris likely wont be here past the trade deadline)
Besides that, we have a core made up of
Cole Anthony - 21
Jalen Suggs - 20
Franz - 20
RJ - 20
WCjr - 22
Bamba - 23
Okeke 23
JI - 24
Fultz - 23
Add in 1-2 Rookies potentially next year (our own and maybe trade ross for a late 1st) and thats a team of 10-11 guys under the age of 25 going into next year......How much more of a "young rebuild" were you hoping for?
Oh and btw, if you think young guys are going to "take the min" to stay together..........umm, can i have some of whatever youre on?

Window of opportunity to make money in sports is between day you turn pro and first serious injury that could be your last game. So nobody will pay for minimum because they like to "vibe" with each other. And even if there is some stupid kid that actually would, that is execlly reason why players have agents to take care of them , if they are incapable of making correct decisions that they will regret later.
And money in nba simply comes from stats. Stats come from usage rate and free reign to not really be accountable all that much. That's why young teams normally suck. Bunch of young players making terrible decisions on court for personal gain, in form of money.

I’m glad you’re not our Gm.

Excitement does that to you. It’s when this team play against playoff team with healthy players do we understand why NBA GMs don’t usually field their teams with youth only. Even through a rebuilt they still wants fans to come and fund the operation.

This is not about the excitement or even them winning against another short handed team.
My point is that the Vets we have can only give advice. None of them are playing and showing the new guys the ropes on the court. I understand everything everyone said. My only point was that we are getting nothing from them, to speak of.
And I’m Also glad I’m not the GM.

I would trade every young player and first round pick including Franz for a star/playoff proven player.
The last few #1 picks have had minor impact compared to the old days of Shaq and LeBron. Franz vs. Jalen alone is proof that the higher draft pick doesn't mean a better player.
Look at the draft picks of the last East champions(Milwaukee, Toronto, Miami, Boston). Very few of those homegrown draft picks contributed heavily(besides Milwaukee's).
We need to gut the big contracts(JI?, Fultz?) and go for a big player primarily in the other conference.

Maybe we can trade two young pieces for a Ibaka type.

So our goal should be to get better vets to help and guide the youth. But we need to give vets reason to come here. The good ones are looking for opportunities to get championships or at least be in a good stop before they retire.

Remember how dumb we all were when we were 18-23 year olds?
Now, you want 15 of them together trying to figure out how to become a championship level team with a rookie coach? Recipe for disaster
There is this fallacy that by rolling out teams of young players they magically get better with court time and in 2-3 years time the team will contend. Too many variables and not enough evidence that it works as a trusted rebuilding process. NBA is littered with players who only marginally improve after year 2 in the league.
Veterans are a staple of all rebuilds, they are the extension of the coaching group and set the values for the team (especially in the locker room and off the court). I'm not the biggest Gary Harris fan but he is an excellent culture guy and I see his value beyond the minimal on court production he provides.
Our issue as stated is the veterans are all complimentary backups, so the product on the floor isn't upgraded by their presence but I can guarantee that everyone inside the organization is thrilled to have and notice the value of guys like GH and RoLo etc..
We really need to think about who will be next years veterans, as we add even more 19 year olds to this roster and lose Harris and possibly RoLo, Moore, MCW and Ross.
To me that is a big question for next years roster....

Once again, my initial point was not about Vets in general. By all means let’s get some star quality Vets. I was referring to the ones we’re paying that have never stepped on the court and helped the team, so far this year. I also wasn’t specifically talking about the Vets that are productive and helping the team/young players.

you need more than just a star. Look at Lillard. Look at Tatum and Brown. Embiid. Harden.

who are these vets you are referring to?
MCW & Moore?
They are making basically Minimum AND are expiring. That is the best place to have your vets. All vets besides Ross are expiring BTW.
MCW has earned his stripes with this franchise too.
Moore, MCW, Harris, RoLo are known to be incredible locker room guys( Ross seems to be that way too).
We are very close to having the very best situation with our vets as any team could dream of in this rebuild.

When your highest-paid, highest-upside guys are perennially hurt...you might as well hang on and pray. You can't trade Isaac or Markelle for anything near their potential value to ORL. If they come back on fire, THEN you have a decision to make. I think if this wasn't such a dumpster fire of a season (Suggs' injury, Covid rosters, etc), TRoss, Harris, and maybe even RoLo would be moving on by the trade deadline...they still might but we'll likely still have a million questions about this roster. I'm sure the FO was hoping to have more answers about Suggs, RJ, Okeke, Bamba by then but the only certainty that I see is Franz - surrounded by a bunch of "who knows?" guys.

I was curious where he's at today.
Seems he's not doing much of anything noteworthy basketball related.
Last mention was him as a Scout for the Knicks back in 2008.
