What would you offer Gary Harris in FA?

Do you think Orlando would try to go after Gary Harris in FA knowing that our back court is extremely mediocre and we lack playable Vets. Considering we didn't trade him or buy him out you have to imagine they're interested in keeping him long term.

I agree with Cedric. A 4 year 52m deal. That's slightly more than the mid-level.

If he was ok with coming from the bench i would easly offer him 14M/y. He is at least three times better than Ross who makes 12,5 and the cap is still rising. Freaking THT makes 10 and Tim Hardaway jr 18.

A couple of the answers in this thread are exploding my brain.

I would not offer him more than a 1-year deal under any circumstances. I'd be willing to go big money on a one year deal, but there's no point in a multi-year deal.

What’s your thought process behind that?

Preserving the cap space for the next summer where there are a large number of free agents available.

Harris might do it as well because more teams would have available money under the cap at that point as well.

It's all about future cap space. I wouldn't mind giving him the Jeff Green special.

Bingo.

I want the Magic to have the financial flexibility to pursue anyone they want next summer.

They needlessly give away some of that flexibility be signing Harris and Bamba to multi-year contracts this summer.

Preserving cap space for a bottom 5 team for the next 3 years seems like a bad plan. Rather re sign him to something like 4 year 45M when not many teams have the $ and build with the 27 year old who seems to have gotten his game back.

whose going to sign with a bottom 5 team for the next 3-4 years that's better then a Gary Harris? We'd be looking at more Brazdekis's and dudes hanging onto NBA Careers vs locking up a 27 year old SG whose gotten his game back to life.

Magic can always get another 15M by waiving Fultz after this next year if he doesn't make big improvements.

Hopefully the young core comes good in the next year or two to where they optimize their talent and become an enticing place for a free agent to sign. That is the purpose of a rebuild, in my eyes. Acquire young talent and assets and then use what you have through cap space or trades to bring in a player that gets you to the next level.

I'd do a 2 year deal with a team option at the end of it.

I'm not overly concerned with having cap space in 2023. I guess it would depend on what kind of jump our current young players take next year, what Isaac/Fultz looks like, and how our rookie looks, but I'm not expecting too much.

The summer after that, which still has some huge names hitting UFA (George, Lillard, Kawhi, Thompson, Siakam, Holiday, Towns, Brown, Sabonis) more aligns with the timeline of the players on this roster and is when I could see us starting to go big game hunting in free agency.

That sort of deal would still give us flexibility at the deadline next year to move him if we felt like positioning ourselves for free agency regardless. It'll be too early in my estimation though.

Yep, I'd give him 2 years.
1st year 14M
2nd year 8M
Second year is a small cap hit, could also fetch a decent return if we still stink.

It's just about having options and flexibility.

If the Magic were to sign Harris to a 1 year deal this summer and then they went into the summer of 2023 and couldn't find anyone better... they could just resign Harris.

But if they commit to him now, it could potentially take other options, signing or trade, off the table.

Not to mention the truly key takeaway from your point - this is a bottom 5 team.

Why should the Magic be racing to guys to multi-year extensions that haven't shown any ability to tangibly move the needle in terms of winning games?

Harris is a valuable piece to a rebuilding team. But the problem doesn't lie in him. It lies in how is the franchise and team going to distribute playing time. Which means someone has to go.

I like Harris tbh. And he is shooting more than 50% from 3 in the recent games. I hope he stays on a shorter and lesser amount contract

Not many teams can offer him security of long term deal on more than mle and all of them are not contenders. One year deal gives us no upside. If he plays well he will need another raise or he will bolt to contender. Its almost always better to retain asset if you can negotiate good contract. Even Memphis had some good veterans to go along with young guys. Anderson, Crowder, Valanciunas
Gary Harris is a good veteran he showed in the past he can move the needle even in the playoffs. Even this year he moved the needle many times.
Our financial flexibility is worth nothing as a bottom dweller.

This FO signed Fultz & Isaac to long term deals which is wild considering one can barely shoot and one hasn't played in 18 months. Luckily Fultz's deal has an out after this year and Isaac has an Exhibit 3 attached to his contract.

At some point you've got to add actual NBA Level players who can play multiple years to even think about signing anyone worth a damn. Considering not a lot of teams have space this summer and Harris is only 27 coming off a solid year with us we'd be foolish to pass for the hope of "options and flexibility".

Re signing Harris would push Anthony to the bench where he belongs as a microwave type guy. You then pair Fultz with a capable shooter at the 2 with Wagner at the 3 and we suddenly look a bit better. Suggs, Anthony & Hampton can be filtered in and out with 2nd units.
