Young players (non-stars) you're keeping an eye on

Post#1 » by thelead » Thu Feb 17, 2022 2:58 am

Anyone else keeping their eyes on a few specific guys throughout the season? Obviously many of us keep tabs on guys that have star potential but I was wondering if there are guys on the fringes that you frequently check boxscores/highlights of? For me, of few of the guys I like to check in on are:

1) Saddiq Bey
2) RJ Barrett
3) Isaac Okoro

Who are some of the 'non-stars' that you guys are keeping tabs on?

Sabonis was the only guy that I was looking at hoping that we had enough to trade for him. I’ve watched him from time to time due to the fact that we drafted him.

Trent Jr. doesn't count IMO. He's already onto his 2nd contract making over 17M AAV.

There are a ton of guys I have my eye on. Not all of these guys are anywhere close to free agency, nor are all of them going to be moved any time soon, but I'm at least intrigued to monitor.

-Paul Reed
-Deuce McBride
-Quentin Grimes
-Coby White
-Jordan Nwora
-Jalen Smith

-JT Thor
-Jared Butler
-Trent Forrest
-Naz Reid
-Jaylen Nowell
-Jordan Poole

The Blazers literally punted McCollum, Powell and Nance for the sole purpose of being able to give Simons a massive (think $100M) without paying a massive luxury tax bill.

I'd imagine he signs a near max contract immediately with Portland.

Bey & Coby White aren't really amazing players but both can shoot and that happends to be our biggest need.

When i watch Wizards i always feel like they are wasating Avdija without idea what to do with him.

I would love to attempt to launch infinite money at Simons to make Portland match.

That's not possible tho. Orlando can't offer Simons ( and vast majority of other RFAs like Ayton & Bridges ) more than 4 years, $121M because they fall into that #25% of total salary" trash hold because they didn't meet player criteria ( Derick Rose rule )
The player was named to an All-NBA team in the most recent season, or in two of the past three seasons.
The player was named Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season, or in two of the past three seasons.
The player was named Most Valuable Player in any of the past three seasons.

But i find that way to excessive money to burn on Simons, especially if you are just messing with Blazers and they don't match.

Also that's your future roster for better or worst, as there is over $115M of cap commited to Fultz, Wendell, Isaac, Simons, Ross (exp), Cole, Okeke, Suggs & Franz & Hampton and as soon as Ross expires, Cole & Okeke are eligiable for exstensions, and year after Suggs & Franz. Hell , add 2022 rookie and that's your $120M roster .

One thnig young rosters are is cheap, one thing every young roster stops being very fast is also -cheap. 3 years pass by super fast and those guys are in line for exstension in a second.

I love the upgrades of Brandon Clarke and Robert Williams. They are what teams need to win.
(( I think M-Wagner can be such a player ))

I was hoping to get Simmons as Portland wasn't in a good place financially, but then they cleared a bunch of money.

It's not that bleak. Ross is expiring next season, Fultz has only 2M guaranteed in 2023 and Isaac might well retire due to medical reasons. Actual only long term contract is WCJ and he is on a very nice deal.

Funny thread for me as I absolutely scan the box scores for "my prospects" to see who is getting minutes, etc...
Kuminga and Moody
Kispert and Avidja
NAW
Aaron Nesmith
Tre Mann
Zaire Williams
Vassell
Josh Green

next degree of nuts is when Vassell or Kispert or Zaire have an occasional big game, I tell myself the price just went up for ORL to get them.

unless the front office puts pressure on him, he can just sit out and collect all his money. I know they made sure a medical clause was in his extension, but I dont hear any talk about its use.

He is bench scorer but can shoot. He is still net negative player but look at Bulls, when everybody else requires attention, he will knock down open shots . Hence, he shoots 45% for 3 when he is wide open, and wide open 3s make 41% of all threes he made (and open threes made 35% of others ) , so he has nba skill. It's shooting.

Do you want him as starter? nop. Is he useful emergency starter when needed and capable of making shots for himself and bit for others? Yes he is.

Is he worth 4 years $80M, hell no. Is he woth 3 years $42M, he is.
