Will our draft pick start on day 1?

Post#1 » by MagicTownBaller » Mon Jun 13, 2022 6:08 pm

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are. I've been having conversations with fellow Magic fans and a majority doesn't think the number 1 pick will start on day 1 with us having Isaac, Franz, WCJ, and Okeke.

Also, safest odds are that Isaac isn't, so spot is glaringly open

2020 - Anthony Edwards didn't start 17 of his games in his first season

2018 - DeAndre Ayton didn't start in only 1 of his games

2017 - Markelle Fultz didn't start in his 14 games played, but he wasn't healthy

2013 - Anthony Bennett did not start in any of his 52 games

2012 - Anthony Davis didn't start in only 4 of his games

2010 - John Wall didn't start in only 5 of his games

2008 - Derrick Rose didn't start in only 1 of his games

2007 - Greg Oden when he could play didn't start in 22 of his games

2006 - Andrea Bargnani only started in 2 of 65 games as a rookie

2005 - Andrew Bogut didn't start in only 5 of his games as a rookie

2002 - Yao Ming didn't start in 10 of his games as a rookie

2001 - Kwame Brown only started in 3 of his 57 games as a rookie

So, if a player doesn't start regularly in his first season as a number 1 pick, then he's most likely a bust.

And if don't count Kwame Brown, Andrea Barnani, Greg Oden, Anthony Bennett, and Markelle Fultz, then the number 1 pick has not started in 42 games since 2000.

considering he has no competition (assuming we are drafting a PF and letting bamba walk), yeah unless they are injured they are starting day 1

No. If Isaac is ready to go on opening night, our number 1 pick will not start.

Wouldn't it be better to ease him back? I've read before you have better success coming back from an ACL if you gradually increase your workload. I know it's been two years but I'd still feel better if they weren't playing him 30 mpg for a while.

If Isaac is playing 20 mpg and gets an occasional night off in B2B it would probably be better to start Smith for stability. Plus Smith and Franz might be our Tatum and Brown for the next 8 years.

sure, you draft the #1 pick and on the first game you put okeke or re-signed bamba in starting five

in a season when you have no obbligation to arrive at playoff or play-in.

Putting our best 5 on the floor would look like:

PG Markelle Fultz / Jalen Suggs
SF Jabari Smith / Cole Anthony
SF Franz Wagner / Chuma Okeke
PF Jonathan Isaac / Bol Bol
C Wendell Carter / Mo Wagner

I agree with this. I just think we bring back Bamba. This line up would not surprise me but Wagner most likely on the 2? Not sure. Whoever the opposing teams better player is - is probably who Jabari would guard.

This is what Smith looks like when he's guarded by a 6'6" player.

IF we draft any of the top 3 PFs as the #1 he will start.

Even if JI is fully healthy, no way we throw him to the grinder right away. We probably will ramp his minutes up slowly to protect him from injuries.

I love MoW bit him being our primary backup C is kinda...eeerrr... and bolbol? I think if we use our srps to get a bigman, he would be a better option.

I like the idea of a 9 man rotation. Give our guys a real run to see what they do with minutes. I know that won't happen.

If it were me.....You use a 9 man rotation only during or near the POs. With the 82 game grind, you gotta pace your lineup. Especially with what we saw of the injuries hitting the league. Make sure your 10th man can fill in your 7th man if ever that happens. So your 6th man better be ready to be a starter as well if worse case scenario happens.

I will bet money today that the opening night starting lineup for the Orlando Magic (assuming everyone is available) will be...

G: Markelle Fultz
G: Jalen Suggs
F: Franz Wagner
F: No. 1 Overall Pick
C: Wendell Carter Jr.

There’s no doubt in my mind either
