So I watched EuroBasket Germany vs Greece today, that makes me excited and a little bit jealous. My question is: Will International basketball work like that in America?
When I was growing up, I was a big soccer fan. I follow World Cup Qualifiers and World cup plus international games. During the season, there are open dates for European Leagues to send their top players competing for International games.
Why couldn't FIBA function similar towards FIFA?
So that makes me thinking:
NBA's top players nowadays are all International Players, Embiid, Jokic, Doncic, Giannis are the Top 4.
Could NBA make open dates for 2023 World Cup Qualifiers and let its stars represent the country instead of the G League guys?
But does that make it exciting for NBA guys to represent our country?
Of course, especially during the season, injury concern is always on top of the list. Will they sacrifice the potential injury or instead just focus on their NBA career?
So i think we could make it work:
Why not distribute salaries for USA National Team players and let them sign contracts before competitions? Just like 1996 Atlanta Olympic, USA Womens' Basketball players get paid a salary of 50,000 that year.
For NBA players, it could get into Millions to make it work.
I also know the argument in "Why should an individual player get incentives to represent the country?"
I know this is about playing for your country. But the context and conditions are different for NBA Players simply. NBA players get paid millions to play in the NBA. Injury concern is always on top of the list when playing international ball. Plus to NBA players, NBA Career is always on top of the agenda.
So why not put up some incentives and try to make it work thru economics?
To make International basketball work, NBA is always on top of the list. Because all the elite players around the world play in NBA.
So NBA has to take the first step, in this way, trying to make open dates for International competition.
One interesting thing: 2023 NBA All Star game is Feb 19th 2023 and World Cup Qualifiers is Feb 23rd 2023.
I know there is absolutely no way this is going to happen 2022/23, or never.
But I just want to see some of the opinions from you guys. I really have high hope for International Basketball and making this sport more popular globally.

Re: After Germany vs Greece, a little thought about International Basketball for USA
Because NBA does not allow their players to participate in games outside NBA league during regular season.
Qualifications for World Cup & Continent cups ( America, Eurobasket) overlapps with scheaduling of NBA , Euroleague, Eurocup so players can't participate.
It leads national unions in situation where they have to put players from local leagues to play qualifications, and those players really have no reason to play, knowing, if they make it to final tournament, non of them will be called up to play ( happend in Eurobasket this year to all of teams).
FIFA & UEFA have mutal interest from World Cup as it's biggest money printing event in a world.
Basketball tournaments are nowhere near as popular, especially because not all nba stars want to participate. Even this Eurobasket had issues drawing all the stars in.

In 2008, there was a 6 part documentary about the Redeem Team, is that the same thing? Did they just put all the episodes together?
