Personally, I don't think having a black actress play a fish is virtue signaling. Virtue signaling is like.. boycotting or getting mad at certain companies for clout and following a trend (while ignoring the products they own or use that have partaken in similar things.)
People getting mad at a black actress playing a fish should be what is actually sad. Brandy and Whitney Houston played as black Cinderella and it didn't seem like that big of a deal in the 90s. It really should only be a big deal if the actress isn't good at acting, and they only did it for representation instead of putting a good movie or product out there.
And quite frankly, there's also a large amount of people in the world who are just... racist. Which, to me, is far worse than being "too woke". I can laugh at someone for being woke because it can become so hypocritical and over the top, while racism just makes me pity you.
This is bit off basketball topic but whatever.
I don't think all that many people are actually racist. I think most people are boxed into "racist " category when opposite side lacks arguments so it's much easier to accuse somebody and let him defend against angry mass and throw dirt on their name .
Cancel culture is best evidence how toxic it is. Some person finds what 15 years old you posted on facebook during your half drunk rant about your class in 2008 and you get fired. Or even worst, leak private messages that you said something, probably in joke. Let's be 100% honest, we all have bit dark sense of humor at some age and you can dig dirt on just about anybody and ruin him or her. That doesn't make you bad person, it makes you human being. Fundementally flawed.
Vast majority of people don't give a crap about what other people do in their life, what they are belive in, what's skin of their color, what's their favorite band or who they bang during netflix & chill.
As far as Disney and virtue signaling goes, just random example.
So Disney owns Marvel and they had Thor Love and Thunder movie. Before movie premier Tessa Thompson and Natali Portman went on a record to call movie " super gay".
Okey.
Now, if you watched movie you will notice few things:
a) not a single character is actually gay
b) Valkyrie is allegedly bisexual, but it's played as throwaway scene
c) only sexuality in a movie that is played is Thor's boner for axe...???
d) Korge is "gay". Okey now this is important
This is definition of virtue signaling. Movie is sold as "so gay" but not a single character is gay, and one who is "gay" mentioned mom and sister in last movie ( ???) AND being gay means being in relationship you can't conceive offspring. But if your whole population is 100% of same speacies than being gay isn't what you are selling to certain media that it is. It serves no purpose but to get cheers from people that live in their imaginary twitter world where they think every second person is either gay, lesbian, or gender fluit. Spoiler alert, it's not. And even if it is, it's false advertisment and ...virtue signaling.
Personally, i don't give a damn if you gender or race swap character, but it gets little bit hilarious when you can see color of an actor and you know who is bad guy after 2 min ( spoiler: straight white guy ).
But it also feals very cheap for that exect reason. Don't you want to have orginal characters instad of just being recasted into something that was in past , historically, white character?
And that brings me to my last point. Disney , and Hollywood in general, but especially Disney, is creatively bunkrupt. There is no new ideas. There are no new characters. There are no new stories to be told. It's just remake after remake after remake.
Look in cinemas how many movies aren't remakes? 5 out of 50?
What was last time you saw movie that is $20M budget and has creative new story? No.Those movies are delited from existence.
Disney new movies;
Werewolf by night- remake
Wakanda - sequal
Guardians of the galaxy - sequal
Hocus pocus 2 - sequal ( after 3 decades? )
Disenchanted- sequal
Avatar -sequal
LIttle Mermaid- remake
Indiana Jones 5- both sequal and remake
Peter Pan- remake
Snow white- remake
And it's not like they don't have money or don't have creative people that can't make new things. It's just coorporate publishing of new contend , mediocre quality and pandering to whatever political party they feel is close to them.
Watch 1994 Lion King and tell me you didn't cry ( i did

) when you watched it when you were younger. Now watch that abomination from few years ago. It's like they took on orginal, trashed $150M dollars on it and ripped out heart of that movie for CGI that looks flawless..but also souless. Only way how you can cry on that movie is if you were unlucky to sit near screen at cinema and your brain couldn't zoom out
