I keep seeing people asking for a Simons Trade or Going after Trent in FA

I understand why people want one of those guys, we need a SG that can shoot the 3 and spread the floor, let s do a comparison between those 2 players

Age: EVEN ( Trent is 5 months older) both will be 24 this summer
HT: TRENT (Trent is 2 inches taller -6'5 > 6'3)
Strength: TRENT (Trent has a stronger body)
Wingspan: TRENT (Almost 2 inches longer : 6'85 > 6'7)
Reb: SAME
AST: SIMONS (same Ast/To ratio but Simons is a more willing passer)
3PT: SAME (same %)
FT rate: TRENT (Trent attacks the basket more than simons and gets more FT/g)
Defense: TRENT (Trent is a FAR better defender than Simons)
Fit: TRENT (Trent is just a better 3&D SG)

Looking at the comparison above, Gary Trent Jr is obviously a better fit and better player, now, let see how much it would cost us to get them

How to get Simons?
Simons' contract will be 24M, to get him from portland, we ll need to send assets, price tag could be around a FRP+ a young player(some people on this board would even offer WCJ+FRP for Him)

How to get Trent Jr?
Trent Jr has a player option, he ll opt out of his 18M/y contract.
Trent wants to be a starter (he is a 6th man in Toronto) and is looking for a contract over 20 M/ year.

Summary:
So we could get Trent Jr for less money than Simons (less than 24M/y) and without losing any assets

I m not saying that I would go after Trent Jr, I m just saying that Simons should not even be mentioned in any trade talk when we can get a better and cheaper player instead

Trent Jr. will end up in Mavs, just like his dad. 3 years in Portland, 1 in Toronto and then Dallas.

How will he end up in Dallas? If they resign Kyrie Irving they wont have enough money to go after Trent Jr

Who has cap this summer:
Houston: they have green so they wont go after him
SA: They have tons of SG
Utah:Ochai is their Future SG
OKC: They have Shai
Detroit:Ivey is there but u never know with Detroit
Indiana:They already have plenty SG
Orlando: WE have the money and need a SG

SnT maybe? There is always a way to get players to contenders...

It’s not going to be Simons. We could’ve went for him last summer and chose not to.

Trent Jr. I like but not as a starter and that guy wants to start.

Probably will be busy being either the best defensive player on Orlando’s roster by a mile, or out due to injury if I had to guess.

Simons is a better ballhandler and passer and a better shooter off the drible than Trent, so it's far from clear cut that he is the worse player.

I'd like to be in discussion with both players. But Simons has the edge on me, because he is Orlando grown. I know it means nothing. But still.

Didn't Simmons sign a huge contract? I just don't understand why Anfernee Simon's name keeps getting brought up it makes no sense. There is NO way that Portland trades him, he is their future. It's like the Lakers asking for Franz. And if the Blazers did choose to trade him to build a contender around Dame, it would have to be for an All Star. Unless you are trading Paolo, Simmons is just a fantasy.

Portland has two routes at this point either they rebuild, or they contend. If they are rebuilding (which they should do), they are keeping Simmons; he and Sharpe are their building blocks. If they are contending, they have to trade him for an All-Star; anything less would be a mismanagement of assets on Portland part. And seriously, what would the magic logically give up that would satisfy the Blazers? People are really looking at Simmons from Magic standpoint not a Portland standpoint.

Trent is a more realistic opportunity because he is a lesser talent but I think he may be in a similar situation as Simmons.

Simons extension has three more guaranteed paying him $24.1/$25.8/$27.6.

Portland might consider trading Simons for a couple of reasons:

1. While Simons is one of the best catch and shoot 3 point shooters in the league he is best with the ball in his hands. Lillard is a really ball dominant player which results in Simons looking like an all-star when he isn't playing with Lillard and merely good playing alongside him
2. Simons, like CJ McCollum before him, is an undersized SG and a mediocre, but improving defender. Simons would be best guarding the opposing PG
3. At SG, Shaedon Sharpe is the future. The kid has such a buttery smooth jumper and has maybe the best hops in the league. Defensively the Blazers have Thybulle who could start at SG next season
4. Portland really needs another quality forward or more mobile center more than another guard

I would also point out the Chauncey Billups is an atrocious coach. Portland has blown 17 double digit leads. If they had won half of those games they would be very much be in the thick of the playoff picture in the West. Thankfully Portland doesn't need to rebuild since they will be able to add a high lottery pick this season without having to trade Dame.

So what would Orlando offer for Simons?

I have several questions.

1) what's the common sense & consensus about Lillard situation, are fans ready to start over?
2) Jeremy Grant situation?
3) Do you think you sold McCullum for too low and do you fear Simons thing will be just repeat of same mistake?
4) What was lacking, in your opinion to your team in 2014 & 2015 to go all the way? Those teams, on paper, were elite, especially 2014.
5) do you feel like due Lillard's , Nurks & in past McCullum's contract whole team was held hostage and rest of roster was always filled with apsolute garbage? ( Or it's just me  )

1. While I don't think there is any sort of consensus the feeling is pretty clear that the team isn't going to trade Lillard
2. Has probably already agreed to an extension but won't sign until July when he can make more than if he were to extend now
3. I feel Cronin should have gotten a guaranteed 1st out of that deal but in essense the Grant deal can be seen as an extension of the NO trade. Simons situation is different since, if traded now, would be a lot younger than McCollum and he also appears to still be improving.
4. Lillard and CJ were young and inexperienced. Stotts did a poor job with adjustments in the playoffs. Lack of forward and center depth
5. Neil Olshey blew it by not getting anything for Aldridge and then blowing the cap space on crappy players like Evan Turner and Myers Leonard. It's amazing the Blazers continued to make the playoffs despite that incompetence.

Portland is trying to make their team attractive to sell. I've heard they don't want to be close to the tax threshold.

Right, ya know the actual “playing basketball” part of it!! lol

As a full time math, stats and data guy myself I love watching people trip over pointing at numbers and forgetting to actually watch the damn game.

I think Simons is better than Trent Jr.

But Simons would cost assets outgoing and Trent Jr would only cost money and that has to be weighed into the equation.
