Price: Magic moving G League Affiliate from Lakeland to Kissimmee

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Mon Apr 10, 2023 10:14 pm

Khobi Price of the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that The Magic will announce tomorrow that The Magic will be moving their G League Team from Lakeland to Kissimmee.

This is probably the proximity issue. It is shame to see them leave Lakeland but having them closer will be more helpful especially with teams allowed to have 3 Two-Way Players next season.

I doubt, but I wonder if Disney had anything to do with this move.

Where they are going to play is a long distance from Disney. I think it's more about having easier access for players and personnel from Orlando.

They will be playing near the Turnpike and 192. Several toll roads around Orlando connect to the Turnpike, and they rarely ever have traffic jams. I live 41 miles from there in Lake Mary, and the navigation says 41 minutes.

The Magic's B-team gets the rodeo center.

Looks like the trip can be made in WAY less than an hour.

I lived in Kissimmee and it's a heck of a lot closer to Disney than Lakeland :D
As in, Disney can sell the Osceola Magic on their customers a lot easier than Lakeland.

I was just hypothesizing though. I doubt Disney had anything to do with the move.

Having run several events at the rodeo space years ago, it’s not a good facility. Hopefully with the Magic as a tenant they can make some improvements but I would guess Osceola gave them a great deal to get them to move. It’s lipstick on cow imo.

Proximity to Orlando is helpful and avoiding the traffic around the attractions should help with players who go back and forth.

Location, location, location.

Disney doesn't give the team anything close to the amount of money needed to influence where they put their G League team or anything else for that matter. Not that their partnership isn't anything to sneeze at. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, definitely.

This is simply a smart business decision on the part of the Magic.

And-1

The magic.com story clearly states that this was a hard-sell from Osceola county, that was obviously successful. It is actually a quite informative news clip.

“The opportunity presented itself and Osceola was very aggressive about trying to get us to come here. I think this is going to be another positive step in the right direction for our G League product and for the organization as a whole.”
