Kinda Duplicate, but should we extend Fultz this summer?

Post#1 » by MasterGMer » Sat Jun 17, 2023 10:24 am

I know Markelle Fultz drew different opinions on this board. But there are several development lately. One, Orlando is making Cole Anthony available. Which means the Orlando Magic organization is choosing Fultz over Cole. Second, we might pick Ausar or Anthony Black for our logjam guard rotation.

Is it the best timing to extend Fultz? Considering that he will be in his contract year and he might improve to be an even better player next season, is the cost of resigning him out of Free Agency might be too expensive?

If it is a reasonable amount, like 4 year 80M or so, we can just lock him up for the long term and let him become a trade asset.

But Fultz was among the most efficient players on Orlando Magic team for a reason last year.

So should we extend him?

Here is some highlight, so enjoy

It depends on how much he wants and how much we believe in his health and chemistry with Franz Banchero.

He has a history of injury and shooting woes. I doubt WeHam will be comfortable extending him without getting more information.

to me, he hasnt done anything to deserve being locked up. he hasnt done enough especially to garner a 4 yr $80mil deal. I really dont believe he has earned that amount. should play the year out and see if he has improved more or not.

I am pro Fultz, but because he hasn't proven he can consistently shoot the 3, I wouldn't give him the 4 years $80 million unless there are some serious contingencies like last 2 years unguaranteed. I would also consider resigning him this offseason at current value or a similar contract as we previously gave him.

This is what i was hoping for too! Would make it that much more digestible for many.

I freaking love fultz and what he could bring to this team. There is still much more to him... his game.... and this effects on this team as well. Shoulder aside... there was the ACL and a toe. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. that toe cost him a huge pay day in my opinion. but gives us a chance to maybe get him at a discount.

If the Magic cut Markelle Fultz, no other team would even want him (unless they are in tank mode).
He’s a proven bust who is a non-leader. One of the 5 worst starting point guards in the NBA, if not the worst.
The thought of extending him is absurd.

Why re sign him early when you’re about to draft another G. Let him play his last year show improvements and then do it. Otherwise you’ve got Suggs and #6 or #11 or heck a FA PG this upcoming year. He can’t even say we didn’t back him because we’ve given him as long of leash as possible.

Bingo. There just isn't an incentive to lock him up unless they have more information than we do.

If Fultz could shoot the 3, it would be 4/140.

Take 4/80 with injury out and run.

I have no choice but to trust Weham on Fultz. There’s too much they know that we don’t and that information - from teammates, coaching staff, trainers, physical therapists, etc - is pivotal to whether I think he should stay and be paid here. Taking that into account, I just think the chances of a guy rediscovering (or getting closer to) an elite shot he once had is more likely to happen than the next guy developing an elite shot out of never having one. For that reason, I remain high on him until Weham shows what they know behind the curtains or a significantly better upgrade comes around.

Agreed. And there was a reason why he lost the shot in the first place (misdiagnosed TOS) and might be symptom-free and keeping himself well treated.

Tricky situation, he’d be a UFA, so- if you think he’s got more in his bag, you extend him. (I don’t)

If he shoots 3/7 on 3’s, do not dream of a scenario where he says “ORL was patient with me, I’ll sign a team-friendly deal for all those days they paid me to sit at home”. That just doesn’t happen…same with Isaac.

Having said that, don’t extend him…actively look to replace and move him as an expiring deal to a team willing to gamble or who can surround him with shooters.

No one will come chasing THIS version of Fultz with big $$$.

thing is, we dont know that. and imo, we were the only ones that were going to offer him the deal he signed 2 years ago, an injury didnt cost him any money. he still cant shoot, accurately, with volume, from distance.

Shoulder aside which is funny because that’s the main issue here. He has 0 trust in his shot outside of 12 feet because of his shoulder. Sucks but its a business and if he doesn’t improve then hopefully the FO just let’s him walk

This is the first I'm hearing of us making Cole available for trades.
Where was this announced or where is the discussion thread?

If we extend Fultz now we're banking on him being something he has never been in the NBA, a reliable shooter that can draw fouls and stay healthy. Extensions aren't for taking gambles, they're for players the team can rely on and build around that have consistent strengths and work well with the planned team composition.

Fultz, literally, doesn't meet any criteria to warrant an extension.
