Off-season thread: Magic articles and other written content

Hey fellow Magic fans,

Now that it's still the dog days of nba summer (barely), I'd love to pick your brains about something that's been bothering me lately. Throughout my years of following the Magic from afar, besides watching games online in the middle of the night and this message board, I've enjoyed listening, watching and reading Orlando Magic content. While I am content with the podcasts/youtube content that discusses the Magic, ever since Orlandopinstripedpost.com essentially got shut down, I find myself a bit starved for articles/stuff to read about the team. Even during the season.

Orlandomagicdaily.com is okay, even though I don't like how it's formatted with the tabs, and their stuff is a bit shallow, and often not that critical. They do post a lot though, which is nice. And of course every now and then there's something on a mainstream outlet. The team obviously has some stuff on their own website as well, mostly general team news.

I remember reading Orlando Sentinel articles in the days before it got put behind a paywall (that's a long time ago now, lol), I enjoyed those. How is the Sentinel these days? How is the transition from Khobi Price to Jason Beede looking so far?

I'm considering getting a subscription to The Athletic for some Magic and general content; if you have any experience with them, how is it? Obviously, I'm open for any other recommendations, too. Or if you just want to criticize (or bemoan the lack of) written Magic content, feel free to use this thread to dump your thoughts.

Thanks in advance, thankfully media day and the season are almost here. :hoop:

Unfortunately I can’t help much with recommendations, but I can give a quick rundown of my experience with The Athletic. It is good for general NBA content, but it is no longer good for Magic content. When Josh Robbins was re-assigned to the Wizards, The Athletic did not replace him with a new Magic beat writer. Now it’s lucky if we get two Magic articles per season.

I agree with you 100% about Orlandomagicdaily.com. The way that site is formatted is actually a deal breaker for me, I just can't consume stuff on that site. I lose my mind.

My favorite source for Magic News has become the sixth man show.

Same, love that show/pod (I differ in how I consume it depending on if I'm at home or on the go).

And thank you Rick Rolled for the update, I didn't know they had essentially pulled almost all of the Magic content creation from there, so I guess I won't be subscribing there anytime soon, either. Hopefully more media will be willing to write about the Magic as the team gets better during these upcoming seasons.

Orlando pinstriped post was excellent, but Vox Media bought SB nation and cancelled bunch of team's coverages, including Magic.

I wouldn’t get an Athletic subscription for Magic content. There’s no dedicated Magic writer. If you want it for other sports content then sure.

There is no good Magic written website content currently, IMO. The best is from the Magic themselves but there’s bias with that. I love Phil, but his site is a pain in the ass to navigate, and some of the folks he has writing pieces for him are not good.

Beede is just getting his feet wet with the Sentinel and Bianchi’s occasional column is just opinionated.

Most of the stuff you can find from Twitter or here or Reddit.

There was a guy Garrett Townshend on the OPP site who was a really great writer. Im surprised the Athletic or some other media outlet hasnt picked him up for Magic coverage. He was that good.
