Would you start Markelle or Jameer

Post#1 » by davey_wavy » Mon Oct 16, 2023 12:16 am

This season you get the option to start current Markelle or Prime Jameer. Who do you pick?

You have Jameers Leadership
But you have Markelles Athleticism
You have Jameers passable shooting
But you have Markelles play-making
You have a small PG in Jameer
But you have a decent size PG in Markelle

Whatcha think? For me… I like Jameer on this current team

Prime Jameer was an all star. I like Markelle, but he's not an all star.

In this era of small ball and flopping PLUS shooting, Meer all the way.

You know, its ironice.... i think Fultz during the Dwight era would have thrived. Imagine Fultz surrounded by an inside threat in Dwight plus the shooting of Lew, triple threat of Hedo and whatever Courtney/Pietrus gives us.

Depends on the year.

I would go with Markelle tho. He is physically on another level, and Jameer was undersized.

If were just talking spacing, then obviously Meer. But there is more to the game then that, and 2 sides of the court.

I want a big, physical guard playing. If you're going to be undersized you have to be especially gifted at something, like Trae and Jalen Brunson type of scoring for example makes up for their lack of defense.

Jameer hit his ceiling at 16/5/3. I believe Fulz is going to crush those numbers and be an 18/7/5 type player and not be a liability on the other end. People can say whatever they want about him, but if Fultz bumps up his 3 point shooting to 35%+ and forces teams to not leave him open, and OR he can get this free throw rate up (jameer never was able do because he wasnt a physical player) then Fultz can be a star level guard.

(btw its close for me, we never really got to see Jameer shine like that all star first half he had, if he was that throughout his career he would have been a multi year all star, he never should have taken Rafer Alton's minutes that year in the playoffs, a huge SVG blunder)

Gotta be 09 Jameer. He was having such a stellar year shooting the ball before the shoulder injury.

From 2010 to 2014, Nelson averaged 13 ppg with 6 apg; on an averaged 37% three ball on 5 3-pt attempts per game.
Even that Nelson gets the tab over Fultz. This is not a close call.

Nelson's first major starting year was in 2007: there he was a 13/4 player with a 33% three ball. He followed that with an 11/5 year on a 41% three ball. He was 25 in 2008. That is, it is hard to adapt to the NBA as a starting PG. And Fultz now is still younger than Nelson's 2008 season (and this 2-years off Nelson's "good" five-year run with Orlando).

In conclusion: I would take 24 year old Fultz over 24 year old Nelson. Easily. But 25 year old Fultz has a lot to prove.

I would take any starter and some bench players from the ‘08-‘10 teams over the majority of the players we have now. That ‘08-‘10 teams were pioneering what we know now as the modern NBA. Also, I do understand most of those players on the older teams were older players, many in their prime while ours now are very young. So what our current players would look like in their primes will probably better than those on the ‘08-‘10 teams.

Prime Jameer was a 50/40/80 player at his peak and a borderline allstar. While I think Markelle ends up being an all-star in his career it's hard to say that he's better than Nelson now given he's only played somewhat 2 seasons in his 6 year career.

You know what? Fair. +1

The thing or difference is we have the benefit of hindsight. But I do remember the post fights between Carlos A and Jameer N on who was better. Even though it was Nelson hands down for me then.

A little ironic in that Cole is actually closer to Jameer then Fultz is. Even though on paper a "peak" Fultz is better then all of them. Except again, maybe that prime pre-injury Nelson. He was about to do something special I think and that injury was a forever set back.

Even know I would go with Meer, im not sure his defense holds up against these bigger guards in the league these days. Theres no Dwight to back him up. I honestly dont quite remember how his defense was. I know Markelle can turn it up if need be

That prime was pretty much one year…. He was terrible on defense his three point shooting was always a little lacking he was just slightly above average and I feel like we overrate it. All that being said I would probably slightly pick Jameer because he played and complimented Hedo so well and Franz is basically hedo prime. Everyone is going to be like shooting yes we want him but he would be a god darn siv against all these elite PGs. I can’t forget that we were playing our absolute best without him. If he scores an extra 3-5 points with the better shooting from Fultz but what if he gives up 8-10 extra points.
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.

I am a Fultz guy but this is no contest (at least so far). Jameer.

I think the better question would be; what would it take for you to start Markelle?

Where's the Rafer Alston pick. Yeah I said it. Over both.
Still mad SVG went back to Jameer after the run we had with Alston.

If we're talking Magic point guards not named Penny I'd go Darrell Armstrong for sure.
