Who is Franz Wagner?

Post#1 » by ogmagicfan » Tue Nov 7, 2023 3:04 am

I'm just making this topic in jest, hopefully he picks up his play like Paolo did after the last topic.

I definitely want Franz to be driving more aggressively to the rim to draw fouls and less of those contact avoiding floaters, which he hasn't been shooting the best percentage from, especially in the 2nd half when he legs are tired

Not too worried though, they're young & will learn with time

He’s having a hard time finishing at the rim because of lack of spacing. He isn’t doing himself favors with his shot selection from 3 sometimes too.

He did say it was made in jest, don’t think it was made to judge Franz.

He’s gotta go to the rim to dunk, too much finesse…

He could be aggressive but the offensive sets were not helping him in late games. Maybe some of you might be right, the spacing in late games was horrible. Maybe that was because we only made one 3pt FG in the second half

Franz is special in moments... a lot of moments... but he is just not truly consistent or reliable yet. He is overvalued by us because he is one of if not our best players. But put him on Boston, Miami, Milwaukee, Philly and he's a 3rd option at best.

We can't really expect to be a legit contender until we bring in another star.

He has prettiest looking driving hook i've seen for big man. It's not layup, it's not shot, it's not hook shot, he cuts the ball under some crazy angle, without much arch, but i've seen it so many times that i'm now 100% it always goes in, and it feels like his biggest "go to" move.

he's been getting somewhat of a pass to me....he needs to realize he's one of the cornerstones of this team....no way you should go from taking 28 shots in one game to 13 the next....i know that mentality is something he has said that he's struggled with but this is the NBA....it's not when you were playing pro ball in Germany where you have to play more of a team oriented game....in the NBA the stars dictate everything........he has potential to be that.....so BE that...plain and simple....to hell with all that "by committee" nonsense mose is talking about....if they don't want to give franz and paolo the keys then they have to just take it

It's Lakers game. Almost every young player today, or in past 40 years, grew up being Lakers fan or Lakers hater. They are brand on it's own in US but especially outside US.
Players know that they will be mentioned in all mainstream medida depending how they preform against LAL especially nowdays, since biggest, most popular team, also has the biggest star in basketball, who also happends to be one of biggest sport stars (ever?) .
Even much bigger, well established stars like Curry, Tatum, Giannis kick in another gear when they play Lakers. ( or notorious example, Beverly only playing extra hard on televized games, and when you would watch him on non- nationally televized game he was "normal" , but on nationally televized games he behaved like angry chivava who dived for every ball ).

it's not when you were playing pro ball in Germany where you have to play more of a team oriented game....in the NBA the stars dictate everything

That mentality is toxic for team tho. " i eat first" only works if your Apax predator is league's Apax predator (MJ; Kobe, Bird, Kareem , Shaq etc), if it's not, he is just Julius Randle of your team. Cancer. There is no reason for player to force things if those things don't come naturally. Franz, as amazing he is , simply isn't player that should at this point of his career take 25 shots a night.
I'll give you simple number:
Magic were 1-8 in games when Franz shoots 20 or more FGA last year. Magic were 1-6 in those situations in his rookie year. Historically, we aren't winning when he is just gunning. Nor his skillset, his mindset nor his natural behavior is to pretend he is new Kobe.

The last couple of games are like he's lost focus and had around 10 of his shots blocked.

i see what you're trying to say but franz himself said that he's trying to become a more assertive player and has struggled with that mentality but ultimately if he's as good as we think he can be then he has to get to that point. It's not about being toxic or forcing anything it's just plain and simple you're the better player and the team is better off with the best players taking the most shots, if not for now especially for the future....franz at times is too comfortable blending into the background and i think he has way too much talent for that...this is year 3 it's time to start seeing what he can really handle, especially if in a year or two he's going to be paid like a star

I think he's just going through some growing pains of getting into that new role. He's also clearly frustrated at the lack of calls he's getting. He's getting beat up quite a bit but not getting the types of calls a guy like Luka will get. But such is life as a guy trying to breakout.
