OT: Top Draft Prospect avoiding workout with Atlanta

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed Jun 19, 2024 5:36 pm

1 week before the NBA Draft, Alex Sarr has somehow not managed to workout for the Hawks. The rumor is his agent is steering him away from Atlanta and instead to Washington.

Ummm...is this common?

Your franchise has had the #1 pick way more often than the Hawks. Is this a standard power play?
Is it true Paolo never worked out for Magic before the 2022 draft?

Just looking for insight from a fan base that has experienced this type of dynamic in the past.

It’s incredibly common IMO.

By many accounts, Chet did not want to be drafted by Orlando two years ago and more or less did the bare minimum in the pre-draft process to try and keep it from happening.

Probably for fit concerns similar to Chet with Orlando.

Some guys at the top, and their agents, are betting on bigger second contracts based on where they end up as opposed to more lucrative rookie deals in worse spots.

Probably not sure where exactly he fits in with Atlanta right now. Ya'll have a jampacked front court with Capela, Okongwu, JJ & Hunter. Sure a #1 pick should be able to come in and get minutes but it definitely is tight. I'd imagine Atlanta FO is selling him on the future plans but from an easy look Washington at 2 fits him much better.
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

Our current front office would draft them anyway. Bamba didn't work out here and didn't want to be here. Isaac didn't work out here or want to be here. Paolo didn't work out here. Suggs didn't work out here.

The previous front office only wanted players who wanted to be here. The current front office has made it clear they will draft you whether you like it or not. They also don't put a lot of weight on pre-draft workouts. We always suspect they aren't going to draft the players that work out here.

If I remember, only Jabari worked out for us.

We didnt even knew that Chet was in Orlando ( never mind meeting with our FO ) until some dude posted a pic of Chet walking somewhere in Orlando.

I dunno if this is the same situation cuz the top guys right now are "foreign" but our FO said to never mind the workouts, we saw the guys play college ball for a year already. We know what we are getting and pulled the trigger on Paolo

Usually, they have a couple of players that work out here and do a press conference. I don't think we've ever picked one of the players that does that. We are all about smoke screens in the draft. It was funny that we were doing smoke screens when we had the #1 pick overall.

Indeed, the only thing that was valued was the sit down discussions. That is: "are you a character guy". And that was achieved for Banchero, for example, via the agent.

Pre-draft workouts themselves at the top of the draft are silly.

I read somewhere that in 2009 the Wolves were thinking of drafting Steph. Dell Curry didnt want them to. He wanted Steph in New York and did everything possible to let him fall to the 8th pick. Apparently Dell told the Wolves and Warriors not to draft him. The Wolves listened and the Warriors didnt.

Moral of the story is the Hawks should draft the player they like regardless of whether they can get him in for a pre-draft work out.

The agent must be French and hasn't followed WAS basketball lately

Might actually work in this draft, where it's far from clear who's the best choice.

I think our FO was trying to be cute wanting to trade down and getting an asset along with Paolo

Indeed. Get who you want. If that player and gis agent try to get cute and wont play if a team they dont like picks him, that player and agent will get blackballed in the league

Klingon is not going number 1. He is nowhere close to being a number 1 level pick. Atlanta drafts Sarr or trades the 1st for other 1sts.

In this draft he might be. Honestly I don’t think any of the players at the top would be worth a 1st pick in any other draft.
