Houston vs. Jett vs. Da Silva

Post#1 » by mattdelray1220 » Fri Jun 28, 2024 4:09 pm

A lot can change in the next few weeks with FA but I think we can all agree we will be adding at least (1) guard. I think we all can agree the plan seems to be for AB to get Kelle's minutes at the very least. I really think 1 of the 3 above will be the back up for Franz.

My case for all 3 without getting too into the numbers.

Caleb - 2 years pro. Most in game experience of the 3. The staff seemed to go to him when Gary was out and even started 13 games. One of the top HS prospects but has been a little underwhelming in College and first 2 years. Only 21 years old still. Great size. Smooth shot. 37% from 3 last year. Lots of room for improvement. Doesn't seem to be able to create how own shot. Defense was ok with eye test. I think he needs to be 40%+ from 3 if he plans to be in the league for a long time especially on this team. Not sold on him but definitely not ready to give up. The FO seems to love him.

Jett - Whether you think he should have or shouldn't have been, he was a lottery pick. Great size. Good handles. Full year in G league against bottom tier NBA talent. 20 years old. Shot 38% from 3. He had some BIG games but again he had free rein in the G league and the talent level is just not there in the G league. Seems to be able to create his own space and shot which is nice to see. Defense seems to not be on par with what the Magic staff is looking for yet. Lots of room for improvement in that area. The FO seems to be hinting that he will be part of what we are doing this year.

Da Silva - Newest member of the Magic. Oldest of the bunch at 23 years old. 40% from 3 the last 2 years of college. Has more to his game than that. Great cutter and even some post moves. Seems to be able to hold his own on the defensive side as well against the 3's and the 4's but yet to see that at the NBA level. IQ has been what the pundits have been raving about. Ready to contribute day 1.

I am intrigued with all 3. I think it is great that we are in the position to let them duke it out and let the cream rise to the top. In season injuries are inevitable (hopefully nothing serious) but we should get a real look at all 3 this year in some capacity. Hoping in the next year or 2 that 2/3 are real contributors.

My initial rankings

1. Jett - most upside but tightest leash due to defense.
2. Da Silva - best fit for that 14-16 minutes that Franz is out.
3. Caleb - Has had 2 years to solidify himself and has not done it yet. I am actually still very bullish on Caleb.

Just my two cents...

Da Silva is a 3 who can play some 4.

Jett and Caleb are 2s who can play some 3.

I think Da Silva is first in line for a rotation spot.

Totally different players and different to gauge.

But i would rank based on expectations next year:
Da silva
Jett
Caleb

Da silva because he is already a 23 and already built like a pro.
Jett, last year, was still built how a teen usually is. You can see how he and Black were still kids playing against men.
Caleb, well, doesnt really do anything except be the most hardworking guy.

TBH I can't wait for this to shake out. I really like all 3 guys. Like another poster said they're all very different from each other and probably even play along side each other in stretches.

Just really excited who stands tall out of all 3 guys.

Ranked
1a) Jett - Highest upside. Exactly kind of player Franz and Paolo need around them if he continues to improve. (He will be the backup 2 to likely KCP or Klay)
1b) da Silva - Highest floor but still good upside as a super sub for Orlando. Would eventually be starter on most other teams that don't already have two other 6'10 super skilled wings. If this is strictly a who is backing up Franz question the answer is definitely da Silva.

3) Houstan - to me not even in the conversation with Jett and da Silva.

I think Houstan is the odd man out. He was the worst prospect coming out of college, hasn't hit in the NBA, and Jett's G-League performance was better.

Between Jett and Tristan, it's tricky. Jett has more experience with the team and more upside. Similar value as prospects coming out of college. Tristan has the edge in overall experience. To me, it sounds like we're going to try to get minutes for both Tristan and Jett. Now if I had to guess which one Mosley would prefer, I think he's going to prefer Tristan. Jett seems a little too immature.

I think Da Silva projects more as a forward than a guard. But, if we're just talking about which players make the most impact in the rotation next year, I think Da Silva would be the safest bet. One of the reasons I love the pick of Da Silva for the Magic is that he's got 4 years in college and is likely more NBA ready. He shoots the three well and that's definitely a need for the Magic. Hopefully, that translates to the next level.

Two years in, I think it's clear that Houstan probably has a ceiling of spot-up 3-pt shooter off the bench. Nothing wrong with that, you need those types of players for spot minutes. Jett Howard is a wild card and I have no idea what to expect from him this year. Last year, he looked a little raw when he saw the NBA floor. He didn't shoot the ball well and that's supposed to be his biggest strength. He's still only 20 years old, so he could be an unfinished product as a player. I'm rooting for him.

Caleb is still a nice end of bench player if we have a few injuries and need some hustle and shooting.

We need shooters. All of them should get playing time.

Houstan is the most threatened player from the TdS pick. His contract never made him a long term feature anyways.

To me it's Houstan vs Jett and the main difference between those two is that Jett seems like he'll have the ability to develop into a motion shooter while Houstan hasn't shown to be much more than a c&s guy. I'm not even sure I've seen Caleb show a real ability to dribble.

Da Silva is in a class of his own. Everything that Jingles brought to the court (aside from league tenure) I think he has the potential to do well. Perfect replacement for Franz or Paolo off the bench and might be able to join them in some mega-lineups.

Jett and Tristan play different positions so it doesn’t matter. Caleb slides to the deep bench if Tristan isn’t a bust.

I think the Houstan comments are always interesting. Even championship teams don't field full rosters of players who do everything...he's a specialist and every teams needs them. And his specialty is very valuable. 37% is pretty good for inconsistent spot minutes that he got, and I don't think anyone can deny how perfect his shooting form is.

That said, if this new guy shoots just as well but does other things and has the IQ that is claimed, then obviously he wins out that backup SF position.

Jett is a G, don't think there is any comparison here. But he should definitely play next year.

In a perfect world, Silva is our backup 3.

However, in college he was mostly the PF. I don't think he can get away with it right now due to his skinny frame. He better work on his lateral speed to keep up with the 3s of the league.

Man, as a big wolverine fan, i really had high hopes for houstan back when he was a top 10 recruit. I thought he was going to be the next UM star, something we hadnt had in a while, but had an OK freshman year and went pro.
With us, i had always hoped he would live up to the potential. He def has the form and skills to be a good backup\specialist, but he really didnt show too much last year and at this point id rather see what Jett can do with those minutes
