The off-season is over!

Post#1 » by drsd » Mon Sep 30, 2024 2:31 am

(From today) 148 days will have passed since the Magic's Game 7 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Orlando's first playoff series since 2020. Ahead of its 36th season, the Magic will hold its annual media day.

It's finally here!

Image

SI.com:Magic Media Day Primer: Burning Questions, What to Expect

The thought lines in this story.

Q. Where do the Magic stand with Jalen Suggs' contract extension negotiations (framed to PBO Weltman)?

Q. Entering his fourth season on the Magic sidelines, what lessons has (Coach Mosely) learned about himself as he looks to improve as a coach?

Q. Where does (Anthony) see his role fitting into the Magic's backcourt puzzle?

Q. To what heights does (Banchero) feel he can elevate his game to this season?

Q. How has (Bitadze) embraced Orlando as home after solidifying a role with the Magic last year?

Q. What expectations does (Black) hold for himself in Year 2?

Q. What does he feel the Magic are capable of achieving with (Caldwell-Pope) in the fold?

Q. Can (Carter) return to being a 15-point-per-game scorer this season?
(pro answer here: no)

Q. What goals does (da Silva) have for his rookie season?

Q. How quickly does (Harris) find stability in his new role?

Q. Will Year 3 bring about a breakthrough in (Houstan) game?

Q. Will Howard have the opportunity to play more this season?

Q. Can Isaac be an All-NBA defender?

Q. What about his veteran role with the Magic prompted Joseph to want to call Orlando home?

Q. Will Suggs be able to maintain his three-point consistency this season?

Q. Can the three-point shot (of F-Wagner) rebound?

Q. What role does (M-Wagner) play in the Magic's frontcourt rotation?

Bonus – Who occupies the Magic's final two-way spots?
(Trevelin Queen is back on a two-way deal with the Magic this season, but so far, of the three two-way contracts each team can carry, Queen is the only one accounted for.)

I like that there is one question for each player, coach and management. It is also interesting reading these questions alphabetically to surname, as clearly some of the answers to these questions impact winning more than others.

I agree with the question posed for all but Carter. Perhaps a better question for him would be, "what is required to play 60+ games this season", as there is a zero-point-zero percent chance Carter goes for 15ppg.

I have a question for Alex Martins.

You are quoted as stating, "I certainly believe by 2030 we will have won at least one championship".
Given that, how close do you think the Magic is to winning that title within that time frame?

5 more window of opportunity. Patience.

Let the new era begin. This team has expectations from here on out… We’ll, at least until the next rebuild.

And-1

Orlando needed mediocrity last year and the year before, to show growth. Growth now is looking toward title contending. 50 wins MUST be the goal. The second round of the Playoffs is an even greater goal.

If the Magic fail to make it out of round-1 of the playoffs this year, the season is a failed season.

Orlando's current roster:

Cole Anthony, fifth-year guard, 6 feet 3 and 198 pounds out of North Carolina
Paolo Banchero, third-year forward, 6-10 and 250 pounds, out of Duke
Goga Bitadze, sixth-year center, 6-11 and 235 pounds, out of KK Basket/Republic of Georgia
Anthony Black, second-year guard, 6-7 and 212 pounds, out of Arkansas
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, 12th-year guard, 6-5 and 204 pounds, out of Georgia
Wendell Carter Jr., seventh-year center, 6-10 and 262 pounds, out of Duke
Jarrett Culver, fifth-year guard/forward, 6-6 and 195 pounds, out of Texas Tech
Tristan da Silva, rookie forward, 6-8 and 217 pounds, out of Colorado and Germany
Gary Harris, 11th-year guard, 6-4 and 205 pounds, out of Michigan State
Caleb Houstan, third-year forward, 6-8 and 235 pounds, out of Michigan
Jett Howard, second-year guard/forward, 6-8 and 215 pounds, out of Michigan
Jonathan Isaac, eighth-year forward, 6-10 and 240 pounds, out of Florida State
Cory Joseph, 14th-year guard, 6-3 and 200 pounds, out of Texas
Mac McClung, guard, 6-2 and 185 pounds, out of Texas Tech and Osceola Magic
*Trevelin Queen, guard, 6-6 and 190 pounds, out of New Mexico State
Jalen Slawson, forward, 6-7 and 215 pounds, out of Furman
Javonte Smart, third-year guard, 6-4 and 205 pounds, out of Louisiana State
Jalen Suggs, fourth-year guard, 6-5 and 212 pounds, out of Gonzaga
Ethan Thompson, guard, 6-5 and 195 pounds, out of Oregon State and Puerto Rico
Franz Wagner, fourth-year forward, 6-10 and 230 pounds out of Michigan and Germany
Moritz Wagner, seventh-year center, 6-11 and 250 pounds, out of Michigan and Germany

When I stare at that, Jalen Slawson seems like a two way deal is his if he performs. And the other ??? I am a bit shocked that there aren;t more PFs on the 20 and 21 level of those fab-21.

What are we thinking is a success for this year? I'm thinking HC and a first-round win is the next logical step. We barely missed both last year.

I think the top tier is Boston, Milwaukee, New York, and Philly.

Then comes Indiana, Miami, Cleveland, and Orlando.

Finishing above two of those teams in the second tier will be a success for me.

Looks quite fluid to me. Particularly liked seeing Black force and play through contact.
