What does future Suggs look like?

Post#1 » by Skybox » Fri Mar 14, 2025 12:30 am

I was about to start a "Suggs for..." thread (because it's fun - Sorry Jalen, nothing personal), but this is actually more of a puzzle to me...

What do you honestly think Jalen Suggs' career looks like? His peaks, etc

MINE:

-Possible DPOY, but unlikely because most often it goes to a big man, as it should (generally), perennial All-Defense
-Discounting previous years, I think he averages 15 ppg for his career, with occasional 25 pt outbursts, maybe a little more in some seasons, but that's ballpark
-I think his previous season's 3pt shooting was amazing and he may match it occasionally, but over the years, I don't believe he is a true .397 shooter from 3...I think he could settle in around 36%, which is good enough, because he'll keep shooting at a high volume
-I don't see his playmaking or ball handling changing significantly...I think his future is dependent on coach recognizing what he isn't
-he'll be a great team leader, all of the intangibles, fan favorite and an electrifying presence in big moments

*I'm really afraid that his play style will make him a regular on the DL. As tough as he is, he may not miss a TON of time, but he'll likely miss time regularly...this is a problem
*I think his contract is an overpay, at least for the first couple of years...at least for this team. Actually, if it weren't for the terrible signing of KCP for $22m+ and WCJ's extension, I probably wouldn't be as concerned...but when I look at the roster, Suggs might be the only guy that a)makes a LOT, and b)still has trade value...and I'm not even sure he does after this season's performance & injuries. That combination makes me have to at least consider moving him this summer...he really might become a high-paid injured guy.

PLEASE notice that I'm not killing the guy...he's an awesome player with great upside...but the injury risk to money ratio worries me...this young team has enough financial concerns already and would be SUNK if he becomes an untradable, unplayable Gary Harris replicant at $35m of the cap.

Bummer of a wrap up, but...

Not really a prototypical PG, not really a prototypical SG.
Not really able to stay healthy for long periods at a time.

I have no idea what we'll do with him, but I know we're not letting that **** go anywhere.
He's ours!

Solid defensive teams need at least 2 great defensive players leading the Charge. Magic have Franz and Suggs. Whomever you surround them with will become better defensive players since players like Suggs and Franz will disrupt opponents enough. Sort of like the Magic with Hedo and Jameer, 2 horrid defensive players, but had Dwight, Lewis and sometimes Lee. Still, the teams defense was at times elite. Not sure if he can become Defensive MVP as I watched a ton of Suggs games and a bunch of Auser Thompson games this season. Both look like either can be MVP down the road. Right now, Auser has the size to guard 4 positions taking on opponents top offensive players. Will be fun to watch both guys for years to come.

As far as Injury concerns, many players end up becoming healthy for years after a few freak injuries as we all have seen. It is too early to write Suggs off. Being Franz and Paolo initiate the offense, the Magic just need someone to bring the ball up the court. Hopefully, Suggs can get back to last years 3 point shooting rate. He was starting to look like a solid potential future All-Star when both Paolo and Franz were out.

Hopefully not on the team. He's a good player and I like his defense but his health is too inconsistent and if we want to contend we can't have that much salary tied up into someone who is that injury prone with how he plays. Would be smart to move off him this off season while he still has value and allocate that salary somewhere else. Along with pretty much dumping everyone else that's not on a rookie deal that's not Paolo or Franz

The way he played last year absolutely justified his deal…questions are:
-was his shooting an outlier or the very first (good timing  ) of many?
-will he continue to be a constant injury risk? Like WCJ- not necessarily major, but constant
-is he the right guy for ORL’s 3rd big contract? (With the idea that it’s tough to build a roster with more & ORL is incomplete)

Here’s one more…does he really have significant trade value outside of homerville?

You’d like AB to get a bunch of minutes and do absolutely nothing with them.

We know that’s your dream.

Guilty as charged.

However, there is a reason behind it unrelated to my projections for AB as I don't project him to be better than Suggs. I think the salary slot can be converted into a third option and I'm worried about Suggs availability.

I'd love to be wrong about Suggs, I think he's still got breakout potential if he can stay healthy.

I'd be really interested in what his actual trade value is (in the real world)....I presume a post in the General Board will get "Clearly an All-Star" from us and "zip. Negative value. Always hurt. Can't dribble, pass, or shoot" from the national peanut gallery. Neither of those are true.

I don't want to trade him...I just want a crystal ball re: his health and his scoring average

Questionable guys that I would trade him straight up for today...that would have been unthinkable last summer (and hopefully again next summer)...
