Knightro and Cedric's Cole v. Black Bet Update

Post#1 » by Knightro » Mon Apr 14, 2025 1:28 am

The official terms of the bet between cedric and I were that post All-Star break through the end of the season Cole Anthony would be higher than Anthony Black in...

Minutes Per Game
Assist Percentage
Usage Rate
Passes Made Per Game
Potential Assists
Dribbles Per Touch
Time of Possession
and Front Court Touches

Spoiler: I lost the bet.

Post All-Star Results
MPG: Black 22.8, Cole 21.7
AST%: Cole 22.8%, Black 16.9%
USG%: Black 20.4%, Cole 20.0%
passes made: Black 34.7, Cole 33.9
potential assists: Cole 6.3, Black 4.9
dribbles per touch: Cole 4.67, Black 3.56
time of possession: Cole 4.0, Black 3.4
front court touches: Black 20.0, Cole 16.4

Of the 8 categories, Cole won 4 and Black won 4.

THAT SAID... I very likely would have won the bet had Cole not gotten injured, missed most of the games in March and was then relegated to a low minute backup role upon his return.

From the time Suggs got hurt on January 3 to when Cole got hurt on March 10 (27 games, so not a small sample size), Cole was starting and averaging 26.8 MPG. Once he finally came back from the injury, his role was drastically reduced down to less than 15 MPG all off the bench.

Jan 3 to March 10 Results
MPG: Cole 26.6, Black 24.0
AST%: Cole 23.4%, Black 17.5%
USG%: Cole 22.7%, Black 18.7%
passes made: Cole 43.2, Black 36.4
potential assists: Cole 8.0, Black 6.1
dribbles per touch: Cole 4.27, Black 3.91
time of possession: Cole 4.8, Black 3.7
front court touches: Cole 21.7, Black 21.2

As you can see, when Suggs went down Cole outpaced Black in all 8 categories.

Alas, I am a man of my word...

Suggs going down made this bet closer than expected.

Would have easily been a win for Cedric.

Good for you Knightro to keep your word! Congrats Cedric and OMYF.

I actually think Cole is going to be a force for us off the bench. Yes, I believe his contribution to the team W could be a whole lot higher

Good bet, and good on you for following through donating to a relevant cause Knightro.

In the end, the real winner at the PG position was Cory Joseph. LMAO! What a rollercoaster of a season!

Big thanks to Andrew for the detailed write-up and for honoring the bet like a true pro.

That said… let’s be real: this was never a fair fight. Betting on Cole Anthony to consistently be a reliable, good player? That's hope, not strategy. :-P The outcome was inevitable.

In the spirit of good sportsmanship—and because Orlando's young talent deserves more than the Cole rollercoaster—I will also make a $50 donation to the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.

Kudos to you!

What made you so optimistic that AB would get more usage as a playmaker than Cole?

I could be wrong but I just went through the schedule from Jan 3- March 10 and I counted 31 games. In that period of the season that Cole outpaced AB in all 8 categories the magic went 10-21. After missing most of the games in March Cole was indeed relegated to a low minute backup role and that's because he does not produce winning basketball.

Coles first 2 seasons he was handed the keys to drive the tank and he did a wonderful job. Each season since he's played less and less minutes.

To be fair AB wasn't great this year either. They both had more bad games than good games. Kinda sad that 3rd string old man CJ was the only capable looking pg after Suggs went down.

I know the bet was about individual stat categories. But there should be enough evidence to get off the Cole train here. Not saying AB is the future, but Coles gotta go.

Awesome for both of you guys with the bet though. Hope the little one is doing well!

With those stats, they were eerily similar. What I got out of it is: Black = Cole. Trade both Asap!

Do you want to bet that Cole will still be on our roster next season?

I’m confused, why did you make a donation?

No! My confusion is about the bet not the cause. I thought the loser of the bet was supposed to donate. So I am curious why you have to donate as well?
