Who wants KCP?

It's the offseason, so the offseason threads should multiply...
KCP was a mistake. Good player. I believe he is a good shooter and a good defender. That IS not worth $22m for 3 years (to ORL). He's an elite defender with tremendous intensity and a reliable effort. He's a long 6'5 and can defend up and down the lineup effectively. He's a 10ppg scorer, but always a threat to hit 3 3's in a quick flurry and he's not shaken by big moments. He's the first guy to put down an opponent who needs putting down and likely the first guy to come to a teammate's defense in a scrap...I like him, just not for ORL, who has a better version (Suggs) and a cheaper, more promising version (AB) already in-house.
Who would be interested in KCP, given his 2 more seasons at $43m?

Nobody at his current contract without us adding some value as a sweetener.

OK OK, twist my arm...I'll go:
MIL made a lot of sense until Dame blew out his Achilles...now, everything's up in the air for them
LAL...he'd be a better fit next to Luka than Reaves, imo...he's not better than Reaves, just complements Luka's strengths & weaknesses better.
BOS...IF BOS really is in a financial squeeze and does decide to try to keep the train rolling but cut payroll...I could see KCP replacing Jrue
(Jrue is a much more complete player, it would be a "good enough" substitute for a massively overpaid old guy). We've seen that White can
do a lot more offensively, so if White hits another gear, KCP's offensive limitations can be accepted - his defensive versatility is elite.
POR...JRoy hates it, but I could see KCP as a solid addition to their young, immature backcourt...same scenario for TOR. In either case, it's a lot of
salary for the role - but I like the fit and it's only 2 years of, hopefully, development of the younger guards as they emulate his professionalism.
Who else can you make a case for and what can we reasonably expect back?
...I think the contract requires us to, maybe, take a lesser player(s) back unless we add draft equity.

We are going to have to keep him unless we attach assets to get rid of him. He was putrid this year and he's negative value at this point.

I think he's still a good player. His defense didn't drop off and I think the poor shooting was more Schematic issue offensively/injuries that hurt him. He's a champion/proven vet I think championship Caliber and young teams needing leadership/consistency would want.
He just doesn't necessarily fit on this specific team anymore.

Putrid? that's a bit much

I've piled on him as much as anyone, but he's a good player - even if down this year.
I don't know what NOLA's financial situation is - but a backcourt of Murray and KCP is frightening. Both are long tough defenders who will mix it up with anyone. Murray puts up enough points at PG to balance KCP's selective shooting. NOLA has Murphy, who has emerged as a 20ppg scorer, in addition to a terrific defender. Not sure what the future holds for Zion, but he's an unstoppable force, when healthy. I don't think McCollum is in their future plans...CJ makes way too much, but has an expiring deal, so maybe they are roughly equivalent in value (although CJ would do SO much more for ORL).
Murray will still be working his way back for a while, so NOLA can maybe chill again next season and aim for a high pick while sorting out their roster and vision for the team before coming back strong in KCP's final year (and then, give him his last deal at an appropriate salary - if desired). Cole is a passable PG/tank commander for a year, while Murray heals up, then has a TO. Cole might even find a long-term home in NOLA.
ORL sends: KCP, Cole Anthony
NOLA sends: CJ McCollum

I think Weltman hinted he was going to keep him and blamed the lack of a playmaking guard for his poor shooting.

I think the Lakers would love to have him...but not enough to give up Reaves. I'd still consider just getting off of his deal a win, but I DO expect he'll look great on another good team. Nobody is more "win-now" than LAL...but they really need a big man, so they may be reluctant to part with one unless another significant deal is in place, but (in a vacuum):
ORL sends: KCP
LAL sends: Hachimura (expiring), Knecht
*Hachimura is a nice, super-versatile rotation guy that does everything "well enough" and is still only 27 and has become a really good 3pt shooter. I'd much prefer having him backing up at the 4 than counting on Isaac. Hachimura compares with Portis, in terms of skillset and versatility. Knecht started hot and faded as a rookie - but that's what rookies do. I think Knecht has a long career in the NBA, with more than just 3pt shooting. We probably need to add something, maybe just srps or #25, but if LAL finds a big elsewhere, this could make sense for them.

I think the teams to call are the Lakers, Bucks, 76'ers, Kings, and Pelicans.

Here's one I LOVE and I think it's plausible for both...
LAC sends: Bogdonavic, Dunn
ORL sends: KCP, CoJo
Why for LAC: Powell's emergence has marginalized Bogi's contribution and minutes. Bogdonavic makes too much and defends too little to rot on the bench. KCP is far more of a defensive force and fits next to Harden's "one man system". Both have large contracts that expire at the same time, BUT Bogi's second remaining year is a TO. If KCP can get back to hitting open 3's and continue defending at an elite level, Bogi's expanded offensive skillset really won't be missed with Harden, Kawhi, and Powell around. Dunn is a very valuable sub, but CoJo can fill in "enough" of the loss.
Why for ORL: Dunn is one of the most undervalued, forgotten PGs in the league...I don't think he necessarily is the starting PG of our dreams, but he's capable of running the offense and he's still one of the premier on-ball defenders in the league. Bogdonavic is immediately ORL's best offensive guard and just one of those crafty vets who knows when to bomb 3's and when to make the right passes. At this point in his career, he's a much more explosive Ingles, who can put up 25 when needed or just make his offense fit into the flow of the game. His defense and athleticism are shaky, but ORL can compensate for that...he's just one of those guys that is smart enough to make the right adjustments in spite of physical limitations.
I don't know if draft equty is needed. Maybe some srps going to LAC, in light of the extra guaranteed year of KCP? Not sure they mind the deal as is.

KCP could be part of a trade (filler) with the Lakers involving Banchero for Luka.
The Wagner/Banchero experiment is over. It’s like Shaq/Webber. Wagner needs an elite PG or Center.

They have called Reaves Core and the contract Reaves signed I almost see zero chance he is moved. Reaves contract + impact is the gold standard all teams want to achieve.

Lots of teams have strong feelings about unexpected surprises like Reaves. They kept him on a an amazing deal because, IMO, he was as amazed that he was contributing to the LA Lakers as the Lakers were. He left a lot of money on the table in that first extension...but he LOVES being a Laker and playing with and being respected by two All-Timers in one of the premier franchises in sports.
But then Luka magically fell out of the sky to LAL. Luka, who is WAY better at the same things that Reaves is good at and shares the same weaknesses. To nail home the reality even further...LAL gets knocked out in the first round, physically bullied as they have been all year. Not un-fixable, but a team with limited picks and very limited financial breathing room has to look at what valuable chips they can offer...It's not like they want to get rid of him or need to...but, if not Reaves, who can bring back a significant big man or even two?

He only has 1 year remaining after next season, if he picks up his option which he will likely do. The contract is not that bad, basically expiring. It’s not like he is a terrible player either. His defense is still amazing, his shot is what is killing him.

The thing is, even if this is a "bad" trade, it is still a good trade financially. And it allows the Magic to package Howard and the two FRPs in trades for shooting depth up and down the roster.
This proposed trade might be brilliant.

The finances are a huge part of any trades we might make now...last summer, we could have just done whatever we felt, to a degree. Now, offloading certain guys -even guys that are talented and useful- has to be a factor. This one is basically no-risk, imo.
KCP is a good player, NOT a negative value...but I'd say he IS a negative value to ORL that would be nice to undo...even nicer if it brings back something that could help. Not too many players in the NBA are better fits than CJ, despite his age and perceived defensive limitations.

So hard to predict who will want who when it feels like the landscape is about to change in a big way. Names like Giannis and Durant possibly on the move. Maybe names like Ja, Booker, Embiid, Kyrie and others become available. Bound to be names we’re not hearing who suddenly become available or get moved.
Even if KCP isn’t an easy direct swap with another team, there might be a 3rd team who will broker and send us something we want. He’s definitely not a negative asset, some team will want him.

Coby White 6.2 ast per 100
Black 6.4 ast per 100
McCollum 6.0 ast per 100
Simons 7.0 ast per 100
Sexton 7.2 ast per 100
Poole 7.2 ast per 100
DLo 9.9 ast per 100
Cole 7.7 ast per 100
That's this year's stats. DLo is always over 9 per 100 every season. He's like Fultz with a jumper. Fultz with 8.8 ast per 100 for his career. DLo with 9.2 ast per 100 for his career.
Edit: wrong thread
