Tristans Role

Post#1 » by mattdelray1220 » Sat May 24, 2025 4:56 pm

I really liked what I saw from TDS. He stepped up when the injuries happened and then kind of fizzled when his role diminished and eventually was taken away for the playoffs. He is a career 39% 3pt shooter (college) and shot 33% his rookie year. There is no doubt he can be 36%+ going forward. His finishing around the rim and drawing fouls can improve greatly. Defense was solid.

In my opinion the back up to Franz is his spot to lose, no? I know we are going crazy trying to figure out how Weltman is going to make a move to "win now". Does that put his spot at risk? Would you rather him be the 3rd string going into next year? Do you even think the magic may deal him if it makes sense? He is obviously not untouchable, but I feel like he fits well with what we are doing and if he improves slightly can be a very very solid role player.

He is a trade filler.

da Silva is a 3rd string SF that can play emergency minutes PF. He should emerge in a year or two as a semi-competent back forward. But he is not an asset right now and is more "hope" than "hype" in a trade.

It's a good question. I think by the end of the season Caleb and Harris were ahead of him for minutes at the 3 and JI for minutes at the 4. I don't see Harris or Caleb as long-term blockers.

He’s part of the core as Franz’s backup.

He’ll show off his improvement at EuroBasket.

I like him a lot...solid versatile, poised...hit the rookie wall or had some nagging thing because, unlike other recent rookies - he was good right away, then got irrelevant. First half of the season, he was being discussed as 2nd team All-Rookie Team and was getting significant minutes. We're just not going to find a better guy that can play 3 positions, in various roles, dollar for dollar.

If another team in a big deal demands him...gotta go, but I'd resist and I doubt others would care THAT much about him...there are players in the draft that could be like him (Coward, Clifford...) or better, so you never know. But if we got a Cam Johnson or Herb Jones, they'd take his minutes...which is also why it wouldn't make sense to go after a $22m Cam who isn't that much better beyond his recent scoring jump on a super tank team...he wouldn't even start here, so a <$4m TdS is a solid piece and a better investment as we get very top - heavy, like any serious playoff team.

This is what I think too. I get after last season everyone is dying to improve the roster. I feel his improvement could be big for us.

This is exactly how I feel. Part of a big deal... fine. Other than that he can play the 3/4 on a cheap rookie deal and I thought he showed a lot when guys were out. Just needs to find his place and get consistent time. I think next year he is the consistent spell to Franz playing 15mpg.

Honestly I felt it was a mistake he didn't get more playing time..... Especially seeing how many chances Cole got to redeem himself after playing like doo doo

Is he doing work right now?

TDS for me has to commit either getting faster as a SF or stronger/bigger as a PF. He is a tweener right now... too slow for the perimeter, too weak for the paint.

I think I’m more bullish than most on TDS. I think he can be a good backup SF with spot starter potential, and if he really pushes himself could get into the conversation as a 6th man of the year candidate. He has a solid foundation in so many areas and if he gets a good group of trainers around him can really build from year to year. He is bright as well, so if he could work on his feel of the game the sky is the limit.

In a rookie year it’s important to look for those flashes and I saw more from him in several different areas than a lot of rookies.

Hes a pretty good backup. He did have a rough second half of the season. But he looks like he belongs in the league. He knows what he's doing and looks poised to be a consistent scoring/3-Point threat off the bench. Plus, he's not making that much money.

I see really good things from him going forward.

Solid backup / trade fodder at this point. But he has a very easy path forward if he hits open shots and gets stronger. That's a solid wing in a Batum sort of role at his peak which would be great.

Definitely needs to get way stronger on defense and not look lost near the basket. His finishing was BAD bad.

I’m usually the most black pilled negative person here and I’ll say I thought TDS was a solid addition.

He’s older but ANYONE in their rookie season is going to adjust to an 82 game schedule + travel etc. He was fine. I almost forgot he was even a rookie most of the time.

Anyway… he knows his role and he’s on a rookie scale contract providing good defense and average shot making. He wasn’t disappointing for the 18th pick and I think he does have some room for growth still with experience.

For a rookie he was solid. I don't understand taking him out of the rotation when he was one of the few consistent shooter from 3. He was starting when Paolo went down and while nothing amazing was providing solid minutes. Him being on rookie scale contract for 3 more years and his production makes him a key bench piece and backup in case Paolo/Franz go down. I expect TDS to be back and bigger role next season.
