Gilbert?

Post#1 » by mattyBoi » Mon Jan 14, 2008 2:41 pm

Gilbert Arenas said yesterday he plans on opting out of his contract after this season. He said the Wizards are his top option but he is willing to go elsewhere.
"I want a new contract for the longevity of it and get another six years at the end of this deal," said Arenas, who is making $11.9 million this season. "I don't know what's going to happen. I could have signed an extension this year, but it wasn't going to make sense for me. If my own team doesn't take me, I'll go somewhere for a lot less to win a championship." -- The Boston Globe

I think those words pretty much speak for themselves.

he'd probably put us over the hump if we were able to get him

Nelson
Gilbert
Hedo
Shard
Dwight

would be legit sickness...but, that would never work financially...and even if we did make some trades we'd probably still not be able to afford it...not to mention lack of depth and he's had 2 bad injuries...

I dunno if this is realistic or not but maybe if washington doesnt want to risk resigning him they try to trade him this year.

They can get a bunch of cap space from us, and they need it with jamison and a couple others being free agents this summer.

Then we convince Arenas to take his option for an extra year and then try and make somethin work for an extension next year.

MLE/Nelson
Arenas/Bogans
Rashard/Turk
Battie/Fran/Cook
Howard/Foyle

Also im wondering what "a lot less" means. He only make 11 mill right now so maybe MLE is a lot less?

Are we really in need of another scorer, though? Between Gilbert, Shard and Dwight, I don't know if there would be enough touches to go around.

We don't need another highlight reel player to put us over the top. First and foremost, we need a serviceable PF that can get us 12 and 7 a night and play defense.

Having said that, I think it'd be stupid for Otis to not at least put his ear to the ground and see what kind of deal could be made.

best defense is a great offense, and that seems to be the type of ball we're playing, regardless of how SVG wants it...the guys dont want to D up, they just want points...

How many championships have the Suns won with that philosophy? Dallas?

Is there any other way to see it?

Look at the top three scoring teams in each conference:

1.) Orlando (9 GB)
2.) Indiana (15 GB)
3.) Washington (11 GB)

1.) Phoenix (0 GB)
2.) Golden State (4 1/2 GB)
3.) L.A. Lakers (.5 GB)

Now, with the exception of the Suns, which I've already mentioned, are any of these teams championship-caliber right now? Definitely not. Sorry, but the best defense is not a good offense. The best defense is a good defense.

I'd rather see Smith go after a defensive player right now instead of another scorer as well.

I dunno cause the reason he said that he'd be willing to take a lot less is because he knows there are only two teams that have any cap space at all.

Put that together with the fact hes coming off what looks like maybe a season ending injury, and the fact that hes a weird guy and is friends with dwight (adidas)...never say never

fran...i can only pray...cause hes exactly what we need

1) i said plain as day, it's not going to happen
2) i HATE Gilbert, so i dont even want him here to begin with
3) you cannot judge a team until you see you, comparisons are great but outside of an opinion you cant say for sure what would develop...so you can post all the stats and figures you'd like, but if it was that simple, the suns and mavs would just stay home.
4) I was simply pointing out that the Magic, today are playing zero defense, so why not add another scorer, it seems to be the direction we're heading in...it was kind of like a poke at the team...
5) Fran is NOT the answer to anything, and i would stab myself in the knee cap if we were ever bad enough that he would be our answer...the dude is not coming over...he doesn't exist..and apparently he's mentally (Please Use More Appropriate Word) when it comes to basketball...

there's like a Napoleon complex on this site...someone drops a little sugar and some of you guys just jump all over it with all the "matter of fact" opinions...

If you're trying to make me feel bad about backing up my opinion with facts, good luck with that. No one's jumping on you, man. I'm just expressing a different opinion. You think we need offense. I think we need defense. Whoop dee woo. None of this crap matters, we both know that. I'm just a Magic fan talking about what I think would make my team better. So are you. So is everyone else on this forum. Why the hate?

Well I THINK we need defense. I back up that opinion with facts and stats and somehow that's jumping on you.

Whatever, man. This is a ridiculous argument. My opinion: don't get Gilbert because we need defense. Agree with it, disagree with it, have a field day.

But if you Gilbert wanted to play here, youd pass on him?

If he opted out and said "Orlando is my number one choice," and if he didn't ask for an amount of money that God, Himself couldn't afford, then I'd probably take him. But I wouldn't make an all-out effort to court him or dig deep to come up with a trade for him.

personally? it would depend on his health, and how it would effect our bench...if we were still able to keep a semi decent bench and get him on a cost effective contract...you'd just have to let Dwight hang out with him for a few days to make sure he's cool with it, and lets him know that this is my team...if Arenas is cool with that...you'd pretty much have to

This is not new, people. Gil said before the season started that he would opt out of his contract after this season. I'd say it's a long shot given the Magic's payroll situation, but you never know.
