Magic fans expecting the club to make a deal before the trade deadline next month likely will be disappointed.

General Manager Otis Smith said Monday before the Magic-Chicago Bulls game that he doesn't expect the team to make a move.

While the Magic lack a true power forward they can start, Smith has no interest in either Chris Webber or P.J. Brown, veterans who are free agents.

"I don't see us doing anything. We're always trying to make our team better, but I think what we need, as a team, is more consistent play from the guys we have," Smith said.

What Otis says every year...

Anyway, he has to be dumb if this team's personnel stays put. Especially with the expirings...

We have a glut of mediocre players at the wing position and we are thin. So Otis get it done.

He's not interested in Webber/Brown?

Can we get a new GM now please...

I think it's just pride and ignornace on Otis' part if thats the case.

I think my 90 year old grandmother could obviuosly see that this roster needs a little "tweaking" especially in front court.

We just signed Rashard to a 6 year deal worth $118 Million neighborhood and have him play the 4!?

Remember this guy came out of high school too, which equates to wear and tear on his body especially if he's playing bigger (The 4)than he's used too...

Well Cook had an impressive outing, but I still see holes and I want Orlando to get some sort of compensation/ asset(s) with these expendable players we have on the wing...

How would it look if Otis came out and said "yep, we're shopping the expirings. Maybe they can get us a decent player. What's that? Oh, yeah, the guys attached to the expiring contracts. They're decent I guess. I never did like that Arroyo guy. But he sure boosts ticket sales! Oh, and that Turkish guy? Pssssh, he's as good as gone. Just hope he doesn't screw up his trade value too much. Man, can you imagine if we got someone good for him? What a con that would be! Anyways, yeah, I hate all our players except Dwight, I'm gonna try to get rid of 'em all. Have a good one! Later!"

Of course he said what he said. Come on now, we're all a little smarter than that. Don't let Otis-talk fool you. Besides, do we even know that this is what he said? Maybe he mumbled for 10 minutes and this is the reporters best attempt at making something up.

I understand that...

He says it every year...

I just get sick and tired of him going public every year about not being active at the deadline...

and then he does...

I will be very frusterated if a move or two isn't made not for the sake of making a move, but to look for exceptions, draft picks, and assets that will allow this team more flexibility since we have three guys locked into 5-6 year deals along with Hedo's MLE.

See what Portland's Kevin Pritchard did on draft day. We have our foundation so now we better it by ridding ourselves of players that don't and can't fit into SVG's system and really can't find consistent pt in his rotation...

I'm sure there are plenty of teams trying to avoid the luxury tax and looking to trim salary.

Pat Garrity: Expiring $3.8 Million
Keyon Dooling: Expiring $3.6 Million
Carlos Arroyo: Expiring $4 Million
MO Evans: Expiring $1.5 Million

To Add:

Bogans has similar three year deal to Keyon, but expiring next year.

i don't see a deal coming this allstar break. arroyo will walk this offseason. PG will expire and probably take a front office job (and continue the trend of in-house operations and promotions). Dooling will re-sign. Evans will probably re-sign for cheap. we'll draft a PF in the 1st round and a PG in the 2nd (thank god we've got SVG around who's got scouting experience. he'll hopefully help us nab some better draft picks in future)

the question is.... who will we use our MLE on this offseason? my guess will be on a PG since Battie will be back and we'll still have Cook, and according to my theory Arroyo will have walked.

First, pick either Arroyo or Jameer. It is kind of like the red pill or blue pill in the Matrix. Everything revolves around that.

Next, choose whether to be optimistic or pessimistic. Optimistic means you will try and see the good in all things that the Magic do, regardless of how stupid they may seem. Pessimistic means you bring up Fran Vazquez, the value of Trevor Ariza and Darko Milicic, and cite the number $118 million in every post. Seriously. That's a law.

Finally, make some sort of cool blue avatar and signature. Be prepared to change it to green.

Congratulations! You're now a certified fan of the Orlando Magic!

Don't forget to make at least 1 trade thread every week. We encourage more, though.

8) Thank you, thank you. Late night here in California, and the wife is working on a project, so I was left to my own devices for too long. :D

He is a fool if he believes what he says(Otis)

We will be out in the first round without a real PF on the roster.

The coming off season is where major roster changes will occur. Right now, perhaps GM Smith is happy to play a waiting game just to see what other teams offer.

It doesnt mean anything. Of course he is not gonna come out and say yea we are looking to make a trade.

fair enough ,why make a trade for the sake of making a trade

we r preparing the season 2008/2009

our frontcourt will look really good
howard+battie+cook(now getting into shape)+foyle+lewis

forward are set with hedo+lewis

sg combo bogans+evans

pg neslon+dooling

arroyo+pat r likely gone

we then will have our pick+mle to help our depth

i still wish we package arroyo+pat somewhere in a trade

^^ why not? i don't think it'd really hurt anything if he said "yeah, we've got a couple of holes to fill. if something comes up that we like then we'll think about it, but no players need to be worried at this point".

that's not too forward, and it gives the impression to fans that he's looking to try to right the ship - even if he does stand pat.

Or the Magic can use their expirings to nab other FAs.
