So I am moving down to Orlando in March with my wife, and I am wondering what kind of places you guys recommend for work and for living.
We are looking to spend somewhere in the range of $500-$800 a month, and full time jobs with reasonable pay $9-$13. She will be working at Disney World, and we only have one car so we would need something that would work out for the both of us.
If any of you know any good places with reasonable rent, or a place that tends to have decent jobs that are hiring in the next month please post here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your reading.

Welcome to O-town, you can get a pretty decent apartment for 500-800 or rent a house, possibly a condo. Good luck, and go magic! right?

I always thought you should have a job before you decide to move, no? I don't live in Orlando, so I can't give you much input. But... Go Mag!

Do you have a career path or are you open to any kind of work?
UPS and FedEx used to be good places to work if you didn't have a professional tract you were set on, but I have been out of that market for a while so I don't know about now.

i dont know about areas within that range, it's pretty expensive around here...obviously if you're going for a small 1 or maybe 2 bedroom apartment you'll be close to within that range, not sure about expenses outside of that with utilities and all...
as far as jobs, this being Orlando your big employers are going to be Disney, Hotels, Customer Service and Tech Support...
outside of that, good luck to you and your wife...hope it all works out for you...it will be a huge change coming from Utah...

Almost life-time orlando resident here so im glad to let you know whats up
If your looking to spend at the most $800 a month im not quite sure where you'd find that, in other words its very hard to find.
My buddy has a two bedroom and lives with a roommate and they pay about $1100 a month between them and thats with utilites and electric included.
As far as jobs i'd say the best place to look is at the many warehouses around the orlando area. You start at $11.00 an hour and even more if you have experience.
But if your looking for a definate and quick job i would go to either disney or universal...They hire people everyday and are always searching for people. Plus you get nice benefits.
My fam moved here from Hungary and they made it fine lol so you should be alright.
Good Luck and welcome to the MAGIC

You can use Apartment Hunters. You give them your price range, area, size, ect. and they will call all the apartments and give you a book with info on each apartment. I think its apartmenthunters.com
As far as work, there are also 2 large health care providers in town. Florida Hospital and Orlando Regional Healthcare (
www.orlandoregional.org). You can find a job doing about anything there.
Hope that helps...

YEAH its gonna be really hard for you to find an apartment for 800 in a nice neighborhood, but nothing is impossible. As for jobs the universal hotel resorts are always hiring especially that busy season is coming up.Welcome to O-town

Ive got a follow up question: where are most of the tech jobs down there for SW or Web programmers/developers? I haven't lived there for over a decade, but my parents still own a house in Deltona that my wife and I had been thinking about buying for cheap. I remember in the 90's the Lake Mary area was good for tech jobs, but where should I go now if we move down there?

I don't know what kind of work your looking for Batron, but I would suggest trying to get in with Orange County itself. They offer thousands of different types of jobs, and they usually pay pretty well. The benefits are what will hook you though, from day 1 you'll be insured with a very good health plan, and if you stay with them 5 years I think you'll be vested in the Florida Retirement system, one of the best in the country

dude heres what you do, get an apartment on Kirkman Rd anywhere, than work as a banquet server for all the big hotels. Yes it doesnt sound like much fun and it isnt. But when your making an average of $25 an hour you cant complain. Ive been doing that for 7yrs now part time.

Lake Mary is still a good area, but now days Maitland is where it's at. Lots of tech stuff going on down there.

If you're going to be living near the attractions/tourist area, let me also suggest looking in to working for the Orange County Convention Center. My understanding is that the conventions and shows have to use the local guys to set up and tear down, that the guys are union, and that they make quite a bit of money for what they do. The downside is probably that you have to work quite a bit on weekends.

I'd suggest hitting the Orlando Craigslist to see what's available in terms of jobs & living accomodations. I'm not exactly sure which key words you'll want to use probably "Disney", "attractions". I'm on the East side of Orlando so I'm not quite familiar w/the residential areas down there. You also might want to see what's available in the Kissimmee area, or the area just west of Disney, where living cost might be a tad less expensive. Perhaps someone local to the area can suggest what keywords to use when you check out Craigslist.

Firstly see above, That is a prerequisite to moving to Orlando, But, If interested you could always apply to be a school bus driver for Orange county.
The pay scale starts off at about $8.00 or $9.00 an hour for your training ( They pay you while training anf for your CDL Licence ).
But they are ALWAYS hiring and they have compounds all around Orlando.
There is one in Pine Hills ( also known as crime hills ), One on Hanging Moss road East Orlando nr the executive airport and one further east on Lake Nona rd and one to the south of Orlando
https://www.ocps.net/es/hr/employ/Pages/default.aspx
You could either go as a driver or monitor, Even if the jobs page doesnt show jobs as drivers they are always hiring.

I live in the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club area. I know for a fact they are hiring within the community for upkeep and stuff. It's not the place to live if your looking for 500-800 a month rent, but I've seen flyers and stuff for different positions.
