FL TODAY: Magic looking for another big body

Post#1 » by Hotshot Hower » Sat Feb 9, 2008 11:32 am

General manager Otis Smith has said the Magic were willing to give up the interior defense and rebounding a natural power forward would provide because of the shooting Lewis and Turkoglu have given around center Dwight Howard.

But because the playoffs offer a slower, more physical style of basketball, Smith admitted Friday for the first time that he's looking to add another power forward before the Feb. 21 trade deadline.

"It would be really nice to have another big body, but quite frankly we've played really well with what we've had," Smith said. "You'd be crazy to not want to help your team get better. But you have to do something that's going to make sense and not just because you feel like you have to make a move."

I hope "big body" doesn't mean we just want some scrub at the PF position.

Right. If they're going to deal for a scrub who can't help them long term, I see no good reason to make a deal.

As as talked about before, a Joe Smith type would be perfect for the playoffs. Is it really that crazy that the Magic would trade Pat Garrity and James Augustine (two guys that get ZERO playing time) for a key playoff guy? And for Chicago, they get expiring deals for a guy not expiring. And given how GM Smith hates draft picks, the Magic could throw a bone in a second in year-it-does-not-matter.

Another very good idea for a playoff run.

JO is on the decline, mostly due to physical reasons, however he is a warrior and has played with injuries severe enough to sideline other players for long spans of time...i have a feeling that JO would welcome a trade to a team like Orlando if given the chance, and I am willing to be that he would react to it by stepping it up and reinvent himself...he would help out a great deal...probably in the running for the best front court in the league with he and dwight IMO...

only problem is the cost trade wise and his salary...

Maybe that is why JJ got min last night. Maybe they are showcasing him to trade him for Haslem.... Thought it was kind of weird that he got in the game in the second quarter after that Denton article came out.

A Dwight Howard/Jermaine O'Neal front court ..that would be a great blockbuster trade IMO.

However I would hate to part with the players that have been doing well for us, Evans, Dooling, even Cook has really stepped it up.

Could we possibly bring in a third team to help deal expirings to bring in O'Neal?

Maybe like ..bring in Miami who has been looking for a shooter and has some big expirings they could deal.

Miami gets JJ/Daniels

Orlando gets: Jermaine O'Neal

Indiana gets: Arroyo/Williams/Davis/pick

Though I don't know if Indiana is willing to just accept expirings.

I forget, what injury is JO out with and what's his estimated recovery time?

I really think that the way trades have gone this season, we could be sending Pat Garrity and a discount ticket to Disney World and get JO...
I'd love the idea of having JO. I've always seen him as a very good player, yet not an All-Star, so he will fit perfectly complementing Dwight. Besides, wouldn't this be interesting?

PG. Nelson vs. Rondo vs. Fisher vs. Nash
SG. Evans vs. Allen vs. Kobe vs. Bell
SF. Lewis vs. Pierce vs. Odom vs. Hill
PF. O'Neal vs. Garnett vs. Gasol vs. Amare
C. Dwight vs. Perkins vs. Bynum vs. Shaq
6th. Hedo vs. Posey vs. Radman? vs. Barbosa

Imagine the playoffs... WOW!

JJ Reddick for David Lee

David Lee would be a great PF for us. Plus Knicks have shown they would trade anyone on their roster.

I think acquiring Jermaine O'Neal for our expirings would be a major coup for Otis, as long as we could keep Dooling. I know Oneal isn't doing well physically right now, but if he were fairly healthy come playoff time we'd match up even better with the rest of the league, specifically Boston and the powers out West. I like the fact that Otis is looking to add a big man, thats our biggest need, even if it's in a reserve role.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

From a personal E-mail to a member of the Magic website board...

On the Magic, I have been told there are three teams gunning for Udonis Haslem,
the Magic are one of them... the HEAT want a star - someone like Hedo...
or they want ending contracts - I have been told JJ Redick, Pat Garrity
and a draft pick would get a deal done.

I have also been told that if Orlando were willing to take Mark Blount in
the deal, the HEAT would waive the draft pick... but that means Orlando
has to give up almost all of its ending deals.

Its not an easy deal to make, but I think UD is exactly what Orlando is
missing.

Steve
