Company That Owns Channel 6 Might Take Away March Madness

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Sun Feb 17, 2008 7:51 pm

It looks like another cable dispute could cost us even more basketball this year.

Post-Newsweek, which owns WKMG channel 6 will pull our CBS affiliate off the air on March 17 if their demands are not met.

Apparently, they want a few pennies for what should be free programming.

To me, this is a complete load of crap.

If this happens, we are going to miss a great chunk of the NCAA Basketball tournament and other sporting events.

You have to ask yourself when these damn standoffs between cable companies and providers/stations are going to end.

Because of this, we do not have FSN Florida, NFL Network and Game Show Network. Three channels many of us would like to have.

Hopefully, the company that owns 6 backs off on their demands or this is going to get really ugly for everyone.

All cable companies suck and will continue to suck until the end of time. Hopefully CBS will carry all the games online again this year. Thats the way to watch 'em.

I called Bright House a little bit agoi to let them know I support them 100 percent.

The lady sounded relieved as she told me they have been getting calls blasting away at them all day.

I honestly hope they do not pay Post-Newsweek a penny for free tv or all the other local stations will follow in their footsteps.

I'm not so sure how I feel about this issue. There's an article in today's Sentinel about it. Brighthouse collects fees for local stations even though they can use the broadcast for free. I'm not so sure WKMG is in the wrong for asking for profit from their broadcast which Brighthouse gets for free (as I understand it).

I think in the near future network distribution and cable regulation by local and state governments will have to go away. Consumers are getting inferior service for above market prices.

As for March Madness, CBS will be broadcasting even more games online this year, with no blackout restrictions. I for one will be struggling at work during tourney time.

As a guy in the early stages of his film/tv business career, all I'll say is that I agree 100 percent with WKMG on this. Brighthouse shouldn't just be given free access to there signal and charge extra for local channels. Every other tv provider pays those fees. WKMG is just looking out for there employees, and not all of them are reporters and anchors on tv. Lots of them work in mailrooms, are secretaries and various other jobs that don't pay all that great. I could care less about Brighthouse's profits. If they were smart they wouldn't be blocking the Magic and disputing Channel 6.

You can get the local channels with DISH. I do. It's like $3 a month but plenty of network shows and weekend games I watch so its worth it.

If BrightHouse gives in, the other stations are going to follow and our rates could go up.

At my friend's house, I saw one of 6's adds that GM of there's sounded so sleezy.

I really hope they do not pay WKMG a dime so there will be awareness made to these cable dispute standoffs.

Howard, I'll politely disagree. Every other cable/sat provider pays a fee, what makes Brighthouse so special that they're exempt? There crappy cable service? I'd rather pay an extra 50 cents on my bill than not have Local 6.

The cable industry is the true evil party here. They don't want to pay Channel 6, but they'll jack up our prices 5 percent a year just for sh*ts and giggles.

A fee is inevitable.

Unfortunate situation, but likely.

The cable industry is a prick as a whole, and punches are being thrown.

In this case, because of Britehouse's steadfast stance on particular isssues............you better expect the worse from them.
