Why Kurt Thomas Deal Fell Thru/Battie Update (Denton)

The Magic had extensive talks with the Seattle SuperSonics about attaining veteran power forward Kurt Thomas. But because Thomas has an expiring contract, teams had to sweeten a potential deal with more than just expiring contracts, meaning throwing in other players or draft picks.
Seattle originally sought three first-round picks from the Magic in addition to the expiring deals of Carlos Arroyo ($4 million) and Pat Garrity ($3.8 million). When the Magic obviously passed on that deal, Seattle dropped its demand to two first-round picks and the two expiring deals.
Smith would have been willing to give up one first-round pick and $8 million worth of expiring deals, but not first-round picks in 2008 and 2010. He deemed that to be too steep a price to rent the 35-year-old Thomas for 26 regular-season games and the playoffs.

it's called negotiation. look how high the sonics began, and what they originally settled for:
1st rd pick from SA (garunteed to be LATE 1st rd). Brent Barry (now waived). Franciso Elson.
our 1st rd pick would've been earlier, but i agree we shouldn't have given up this season's first rd pick just to rent KT for 26 games.
actually.... i don't think KT is worth a 1st rd at all. Wilcox, yes. KT, no.

I'm pretty sure the Spurs got a little benefit from dealing with Presti..
I don't think I would've given up on our 1st for Thomas. Like Thomas is going to make us a contender..

as the article mentions Presti made deals with the Spurs and Cavs one right after another...might not be so coincidental...

I really think this whole article is a bunch of made up junk.
What team would realisticly as for 3 1st round picks.
That is so bogus.
And even if they for some reason did...Why did they settle for was less?
And since they did settle for way less...Why wasnt it the Magic doing this deal?

ever think that maybe Seattle didnt really want to deal Thomas to the Magic? but they figured "hey if they give us 3 1sts we have to take it", hmm? deals aren't usually decided upon by one team...

you always start high, that is known, if they started at 1 draft pick then thats the most they would get if none at all once negotiating started
as the GM it is his duty to try and get as much value back as possible for the team, I would assume most deals are start @ 3 picks, it never happens but you have to see how high the other team values that player

It is call negotiations. You ask for a price for so high that you know the other person will reject that way when you come to middle ground it is still in your favor.

The Lewis trade has so far resulted in the accumulation of three first round picks. Or so I read somewhere.

The Sonics also received a trade exception from the Magic...Traded it along with a 2nd round pick to the Suns for Kurt Thomas and 2 1st round picks..Then traded Kurt Thomas for another 1st round..
they basically flipped the trade exception into 3 1st round picks.

This is bull. This is the same old Otis stuff that whenever a move isn't made they were asking for the moon that is why. You really think Seattle wanted 3 first round picks for KT. I don't even think that is possible.
Sorry this is why I'm not a Denton fan. Instead of just saying hey I didn't want to trade any draft picks it has to be well Seattle was asking for the moon. Seattle traded him for 1 first round pick. How you have an article saying we would have done the deal for 1 first round pick when that was what the deal was done for.

You think that they would lie about specific requests in print? Sam Presti can now easily claim something different and make Otis look like a fool.
I tend to agree with what theif said, they probably were trying to see how desparate the Magic really are AND they gave San Antonio HUGE discount. How is SA's 2009 pick worth more than Orlando's? That's just dumb.
So, unless someone proves the Sonics asked for only one pick then I'll admit that Otis made the right move on Kurt Thomas.

As a matter of professional courtesy GMs don't go around telling people what other teams offered. Rarely happens so that argument has no weight

Actually its somewhat irrelevant. We don't need to guess why Otis didn't make a move. He told us POINT BLANK. He didn't want to trade JJ who never plays, he didn't want to be without a third string PG but loves the team without a PF and he had to be fiscallly responsible after spending 118 million on one player.
Until Otis defenders can wave a magic wand and make all of his own statements disappear no one has to prove anything else.
