Hey guys,

Its been quite awhile since I've posted on here, but I'm coming toward the end of my college days and am now considering graduate programs. I was wondering if anyone knows how good the UCF Sport Business Program is, and if anyone is actually in it or no someone in it could they let me know how they like it. Thanks guys.

i have a friend who works for the Chargers and a friend that works for the Blazers, both went to school at UCF and both went to the Sports program, they loved it...It's apparently one of the top programs in the nation...but dont quote me on that...

I looked into it back when I first started at UCF, and it is regarded as one of the best in the nation for sure.

However I'll just say this, it's VERY selective. Or at least that's what I remember reading about it. It's been 3 years since I read about it first, so I can't remember the exact details, but I think something like 100 apply every year and only the top 25-30 get in or something like that.

The program is quite well knwon, I was actually looking foward to joining it. With it requiring a buisness mang. degree before hand, and THEN the two years, I cannot afford it. So, I am stuck going to UNF an doing their sports mang.

But yeah, if you can get in, it's a wonderful school that gives you TONS of opportunities.

Program is run by an amazing staff.... If you want in the business side of the NBA, it's a great place to start. Very Very Very well connected people.

I was in the inaugural class and I have been doing public accounting since I graduated. While I made some great friends and it was an interesting 2 years I can honestly say that I was very dissappointed with my experience. I had a vision of what I wanted to do (Work with the salary cap either in the NBA or NFL) and conveyed it to everybody that was at the head of the program. They never really provided me with the assistance that someone who is not connected with sports needs.

For example, they touted the Sacramento Kings as a destination for an internship and I was really excited because I thought that I would have a chance to meet Mr. Petrie who was and still is a great GM and maybe make a great impression. However, they didn't say till after everybody gave their preferences that the Sacramento internships were really with the Monarchs and was in the Marketing Department. Meanwhile, they had an NFL internship that would have put me right into the Management Council where they work on the contracts.

I will say that I really haven't spoken with anybody that runs the program since I graduated so they might have established a better network. I would simply say do your research before you decide on UCF. I know that Ohio University has a pretty good program as well with some good connections in sports.

I wasn't in the sport business management program, but I will say if you are a business major at UCF... Take professional Selling with Gundy. She helps people get a chance to go to the NBA Job Fair. It is ticket sales and selling, but it's a doorway to the NBA if you want it bad enough.

When I attended UCF a few years back that was the direction I had planned on taking and really the main reason I attended UCF being from the Tampa area I had a pretty good school in my backyard in USF

However, UCF had one of the best programs at the time, I took another route and started my own business instead although I never tried it was supposedly pretty hard to get into

What UCF said about Gundy's class is true, 2 students at the time I was attending got jobs with the Magic in ticket sales, that is if you are into sales

How does UCF have the largest undergraduate class in the state but support that class with ~1/4 and ~1/10 of the funds the number 2 and 3 schools receive respectively? Seems a bit ...impossible...to me.

And if you UCFers perceive this as trolling, it's not, it's obviously an important decision to know if your school has enough funding to support you adequately. UCF is the only school in the top 4 size of the state that is not a tier 1 research school via the Carnegie Foundation, and not surprisingly, it is by far the worst funded of the largest schools.

USF isn't a great business school, we get our funding via engineering and medical. THough, yes, those figures were based on USF and UF, FSU gets about 4x more funding than UCF does with a smaller undergraduate class as well.

It's always baffled me really.

Here are the figures if you take the ratio for the endowments the top 4 schools in FL receive divided by the undergraduate students.

Notice how insanely high UF is, and how insanely low UCF is.

FSU: $16879/Undergrad student
UCF: $2791/Undergrad student
USF: $11414/Undergrad student
UF: $34670/Undergard student

I find it hard to believe that UCF students don't suffer. Maybe the sports business majors don't given the glowing reviews, but it makes sense that the generally accepted top two schools in the state (UF/FSU) have the top two endowment (and this is almost always how a school is judged) ratios.

im a student at UCF also, and ive had family and friends go to USF and transfer to UCF. They say USF doesnt compare. Im pretty sure UCF is a way better school and USF is better at atheletics

I almost transferred to UCF. So I don't hate the school, nor do I have disrespect for it. I don't like the sports, but the academia is what counts right?

As far as the academia though, it is totally unproven that UCF > USF. I don't care what your family and friends say, I presented you with facts (i.e. not a tier 1 research school, greatly reduced funding, largest undergrad class but the smallest graduate class -- meaning people don't stay there to continue with their MS/PhD, they either seem to be leaving for UF/FSU/USF).

I'm just trying to give some concrete information in between all of this speculation from UCF homers.

P.S. As far as I knew, UCF was a good engineering school and that's about it, I've never heard of anyone going to UCF for another purpose unless they're just close to it or have some other weird reason to like it. Being an engineer, you can understand why I was debating on transferring there. However, business school? They didn't place in the top 200 schools in the country (neither did USF), so they must not be all that.

In summary, I'd say:

1. USF is a significantly better med school (if not the best in the state besides UF).

2. UCF is a moderately better engineering school depending on what you get into. Our program is also good though and where we get lots of funding outside (again, the way a school is traditionally judged).

3. They have roughly equally mundane business schools.

4. USF is a significantly better sports school (who cares?).

The above is about as an honest scale that I used in deciding on going to USF over UCF, and was the main premise of me not transferring to UCF a couple of years ago.

Well the "facts" say that Arenas/Marburry/Francis are not ball-hogs

Ya i'm not very well informed on how good all the departments of UCF are but i do know that it is a fact that UCF is one of the best schools for business in the country (from what i've read far better than USF) i never attend classes at USF so i dont know nor do i care. I've visited USF and i like the campus in down town St. Pete just cause st pete is nice. but the main campus cant even compare to UCF. They said on the tour they were still building a lot so i suppose it will eventually but as of now UCF's facilities are a lot better. the fitness center is nuts. and we do have a stadium now, and a brand new arena for basketball. But i would think that USF is getting on that seeing how successful their football, soccer, and basketball teams have been recently

All of what im saying is based on my college search from senior year in HS. thats just the stuff i heard from college fairs and guest speakers and hand outs with information on it. Not stating USF is a bad school, cause it most certainly is not. But just from the info i have recieved UCF is supposedly a great business school

isn't there something like a 40 student per semester or year limit with that DeVos program?

I never said they don't have a sport business program -- I don't even know what the hell that program is so how would I know.

I have a subscription to US News which is one of the de facto standards on top schools, and UCF did not place in their top business schools (neither did USF) -- they did not have a sport business subsection though.

The only place I noticed USF or UCF on any of the lists was in health for USF and in computer engineering for UCF.

Evidently the sport business management school is a great program and you should definitely try to get in there.

P.S. On USF's looks as you mentioned -- it was voted the most aesthetically pleasing architectural school in the state in 2005 I believe it was. Nuff said.
