Ticked off Magic Fan (Orlando, FL): Jemele, Please tell me you think Dwight Howard is a franchise player? There are rumors that you and skip bayless believe otherwise...If he's not a franchise player, then who is?
Jemele Hill: Before you blow a gasket, understand that there's a difference between a franchise player and a max player. A franchise player is Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Shaq. Those are guys that change the fortune and courses of franchises. They imprint their image and will on the city and the team.
Dwight Howard is still learning and developing. He's a terrific player. He's a max player, meaning his skill set is worth paying max money for. But in the 4th quarter, who do they go to? Turkgolu. Is he the leader of that team? No. Have you seen him will his team to many games? Not really.
Dwight still has some maturing to do as a person. He's very good-natured, kind of silly. Once he develops a killer instinct, I'll call him a franchise player.
Jon (Columbus): So Jason Kidd who cant shoot is a franchise player?
Jemele Hill: Hey, I'm not talking about the Jason Kidd we see now. Realize, he's in the decline. Though, even in that state, he's still better than 60 percent of the PGs in the NBA. But this is the same Jason Kidd that drug the Nets to the Finals TWICE. He's made a lot of careers in the NBA (Kenyon Martin).
Mike (Boston) : You're nuts! Dwight Howard is as franchise as you can get. The Magic wouldn't win anything if he wasn't there. He's a beast on the boards and is a big time scorer as well. Big men are what win games in the NBA...just ask your "franchise" player Kobe Bryant. He couldn't "change the course of the franchise" when he didn't have a big man. Big men are what win championships in the NBA.
Jemele Hill: You guys still aren't getting me. I didn't say you couldn't build around Dwight Howard. Obviously, you can. But Howard lacks the killer instinct a franchise player must have. It's not uncommon in a growing, developing guy. I need to see some more mean-ness from him on the court.
In just about all of the Magic's significant, fourth-quarter wins, Hedo Turkgolu has been the go-to guy. Not Dwight Howard. In part because he's not a great free-throw shooter.
But if you're asking me if this kid will ever lead the Magic to a NBA championship? Not this year. And not until he becomes a meaner player.
Jon (Columbus): Jemele, I agree with you about Dwight but I would go farther and say that to be considered a franchise player is even tougher than you referenced. Some of the examples you gave are not franchise players either due to not enough of a resume or performance. Lebron, TD, Shaq, Kobe are franchise players, but Wade, Paul, Kidd are max. Paul and Wade have a chance but with Miami being horrible that negates what being a franchise player is about and hurts Wade. Paul needs more time before you can label him a franchise player
Jemele hill: We big-time disagree. Wade was Finals MVP. He was ridiculous against Dallas. CP3 is definitely a franchise player. Look at how far he's brought that franchise. They might be a top 3 seed? What was David West before CP3? Tyson Chandler? Paul is changing New Orleans' franchise and is a legit MVP candidate.
You're wrong about Kidd. Don't think about Kidd now. Think about Kidd when he took New Jersey to the brink. Look at that roster that made it to those Finals.' Kerry Kittles? Kenyon Martin? You've got to be kidding me. Where would the Nets have been without Kidd?
Ben (Bartow, FL): Jemele, I have to disagree about the Orlando Magic comment. I will agree that Dwight Howard is still learning and right now he isn't the "go-to guy" on his team. But your comment about Turkoglu is waaaay off. He has willed the team several times in the 4th, hit buzzer beaters, got snubbed in the All-Star voting, and you always see Stan Van Gundy get Turkoglu opportunities to make plays in the 4th. KG said that "one of three teams will win this conference" (DET, CLE, BOS) The Magic have beaten all of them, and will eliminate at least one of them in the playoffs...
Jemele hill: How is my comment about Turk way off? I said he was their go-to guy. He has won their games in the 4th, not Dwight. I gave him credit for that.
Incredibly upset Orlando Magic Fan (Miami, FL): Wait a second, you just pulled a Kansas City shuffle... One minute you say it's about who finishes games then you say it's not about the fourth quarter...Which is it? Also, in one of your previous chats you mentioned that Amare Stoudemire was a franchise player...if he is...then dwight should be as well correct???
Jemele hill: I didn't say it wasn't about the 4th quarter. It is exacty about that. Maybe that was a typo. I didn't shuffle.

WTF? I listened to her on First Take when she made those comments, and it kinda, sorta made sense. But this babble? These guys are owning her lol.
4th quarter? The guy that owns the 4th is called a go-to guy. And it's not a prerequisite to be franchise. I mean, Shaq has dominated 4th quarters all throughout his career, right? 20 seconds left, down 1, they're going to post Shaq up, correct? I mean, who can forget all those buzzer beaters and clutch free throws he's made in his career? LOL

Jemele is a tool lol. Its appaling that she discussses basketball when she cant even understand it. The only reason she is on ESPN is because she tries really hard to write controversial articles to get attention. Anyone that appears on First Take is a loud mouth "hear me" tool and a joke.

Good point. I was about to post about how I understood her view, but you're right, you don't have to necessarily be THE go-to guy in the 4th to be a franchise player.
It certainly helps, but isn't a requisite.

That's just plain silly. D-Ho is a franchise player in every sense or possible meaning of the word. He doesn't have to be Mr. 4th quarter to be a franchise player. How many nights did Scottie Pippen, Steve Kerr, Dennis Rodman, or others save MJ's ass in the 4th quarter? It's not about the 4th quarter, it's about the game as a whole. And anyone who knows anything about basketball knows that Dwight DOMINATES. Period. That's not even to mention his character and personality are miles above any other player she named.
Go ahead, Jemele, ask any NBA player who they'd rather defend 1 on 1 in a close game -- Dwight Howard or Jason Kidd. Are you kidding me? Joke.

My 2 favorite NBA teams:
1) Orlando Magic
2) Whoever is playing the Celtics

So true - what a joke of a conversation and to hear it on ESPN suprises me most... you'd think they would come up with a more positive topic for the best C in the NBA!
The franchise player is usually the face of the squad, not to mention most dominant - and that's what DHoward is - he's still growing isn't a reason not to label him a franchise player...
Jemele, you need to watch more NBA games (especially Magic games) before you start talking about who's who in the BB world...
