Women and sportscasting

Post#1 » by Cigamodnalro » Sun Apr 6, 2008 6:27 pm

Not intended as a sexist argument, but I've just never seen a woman competently comment on a basketball game. Michelle Tafoya, Cheryl Miller, etc. It's nice enough to look at them during halftime (Miller excluded), but it's real tough to listen to.

This comes as Heather Mitts calls Don Nelson "David Nelson", by the way...

haha, yea Erin Andrews was practically being dry-humped by the entire student section.

Everytime I see a women talk about sports, I think "a man could've made that point better"

Let me take this opportunity to remind you guys that Erin Andrews is a proud UF grad :D

Doris Burke is actually a pretty good announcer, but she's the only one I can think of.

I agree, she knows more about basketball than almost every play by play guy. She's the female version of Hubie Brown. She must be good if they let her call the games, because she is UGLY!

As the years go by more and more women are getting heavily involved in areas of the sport and in numbers unheard of before and as such there will be more and more women entering fields such as announcing who are much more qualified than the current field. Just my opinion though.

I wouldn't mind strolling across her end zone every Saturday.

You're kidding about Cheryl Miller, right?

You might not think she's good to look at -- like Erin Andrews -- but I guarantee you that Cheryl Miller has forgotten more about basketball than maybe all of you guys.

You guys know that she was a national player of the year, right? You know that she led a gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team? That she has coached pro ball? That Reggie Miller (her brother) credits her with making him the shooter he is because of their one-on-one competitions (she's older)?

I think the problem is....the networks usually are more interested in getting someone who is good to look at than someone who knows anything about the game; it can be difficult to find both. Since all of you started talking about Erin Andrews right away, it doesn't sound like you've very interested in what they have to say.

to be fair, most of the women who work men's college basketball and NBA games are sideline reporters.

i think you'll find that most sideline reporters, male or female, don't have a deep understanding of the sport they're covering--most of them cover multiple sports throughout the year--since it's really not part of their job description to do any sort of commentary or analysis.

they are, like their name suggests, simply reporters.

for a fair comparison, you'd have to look at doris burke, swin cash (who probably needs to stick to just playing basketball) and the female commentators for WNBA and women's college basketball games.

Michelle Tafoya, Cheryl Miller, etc. It's nice enough to look at them during halftime (Miller excluded), but it's real tough to listen to.

michelle tafoya? nice enough to look at?

no.

i also think cheryl miller knows the game of basketball, but i think that she, much like her brother, just isn't cut out for TV.

This comes as Heather Mitts calls Don Nelson "David Nelson", by the way...

ask jim grey, it happens.

Agreed. No offense, but it seems like something is missing when they do play by play. Just can't get used to it.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability
