Who do you think we should pick in the draft vs. actual pick

Post#1 » by sChOlaRlY_Magi » Tue Apr 8, 2008 5:01 pm

I was just wondering, as I don't follow college as much as some may on this board what your opinions are.

Obviously with the exception of Dwight and Shaq we haven't drafted very well in previous seasons. Therefore I would like to see what everybody's opinion is on who we should draft, and who we will probably wind up getting...

Do you think a trade will be in the works to move up. Or will we end up moving down for some odd reason. Will we trade away the pick and expirings for a vet?

Or do we simply stand pat and draft the best player available? Or just hope for someones stock to fall and draft the big we need?

Ladies & Gentlemen, start your opinions!

Just going off of what draftexpress.com says, I think we should go for another big man in the first round. If somehow we could get Hibbert, Hasheem Thabeet , Robin Lopez, Darrell Arthur, or even Tyler Hansbrough that would be a steal in my opinion. There's a good chance one of those players will fall to us. While there are some nice pg's in the draft, I don't think we can move up enough to get like an Augustin or Bayless.

My ideal pick for the Magic in the 21st spot would be Darren Collison. He reminds me of Armstrong with maybe a better shot. His long arms and tenacious D coupled with his scoring skill set is mouth watering. He would make a great compliment to Meer.

Who the Magic actually take is beyond me. I'll guess Collison won't be on the board by our pick and then it is most likely a big or a sf that will go. Just to through out another name I'll say Kosta Koufos, who if he declares I really like.

use JJ/Fran to move up and draft whatever PG,SG or PF that falls.

some honorable mentions:
Batum (personal fave) i dont care about the risk of international players, if we score a star international player in the mid first, we could hit a jackpot/multiple championships.
Budinger
Love
CDR
Collison
Westbrook
Arthur

OR

We could find a servicable PF/C in this draft where we pick.
like:
Thabeet
Hibbert
Hansborough
Thompson

How can two websites be so off?

nbadraft.net is (Please Use More Appropriate Word) while draftexpress.com usually is more accurate.

I would like for us to draft a backup to Jameer, someone like Collison, Weaver, or Chalmers, but I'm afraid we will try to replace Garrity with Hansbrough or Love. If we do go with a big man, I hope we steer clear of these two over-hyped players. Love would be more acceptable than Hansbrough, but there are many others that I like much better.

^ why that assessment? I know nearly nothing about either except what I've heard, and all that has been is good/hyped. What's wrong with either of these guys that you would'nt grab them if available?

When was it that the last hyped up big white guy in college actually did good in the pros? That's why people are scared to draft them.

^^^^ But it would be foolish to just pass up on a player because he is white and was really good in college.

Hansbrough will definitely struggle at the next level. He's a skinny four. I view him as the JJ Redick of this years draft, tremendous college player, but will have trouble making the transition to the nba. Love, although he's much bigger at 260lbs, has trouble running the floor. He can't make it up and down the court and would slow us down. He does have a knack around the basket though, and does provide toughness at the position, but to not be able to run in transition for a 6-9 pf is bad news. I'd stay away from both of them.

I wasn't expressing my opinion necessarily, but I don't think they will be as dominant on the next scale, but I wouldn't pass them up. I see Hansbrough as like a David Lee type player.

lol, I'm not against drafting white players, and thats not why I'm down on those two. I just believe that they are over-hyped. As far as CDR goes, I like his size, but he is a very un-orthodox player. I do believe that he will go at the end of the first round though. Both he and Rush' performance in the tourny will have someone reaching for them early. I believe that the depth at sg is pretty deep though. We can get a similar player as those two without having to pay them guaranteed money. I really like the kid from Vandy, Shan Foster. I think he will be a better player in the long run anyway.

I saw Thabeet against UCF.

The guy is remarkably quick getting up off of his feet. He reminds me of Mutumbo when he was Georgetown. Very similar as athletes at this age.

Offensively he doesn't bring much yet, but is very athletic and moves very well defensively inside the box.

He's gonna block a lot of shots.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

CDR i think will be a good role player for us. And my very wild card... JR Giddens.

Craig thats what this team needs. A big that is fairly athletic, and can rebound and blocks shots so that Dwight and Pat arent the only shotblockers.

^ That's soo true. We dont normally need more scoring power, but we definitely need some inside presence, rebounding and shot blocking...

LOL - I see that most aren't putting who they think the magic will end up drafting... Too hot of a topic I take it!

Kostas Koufos is a stud but I don't think he'll come out.

I actually think we'll get Hibbert and I've been feeling it for a while now.
