I came across a HUGE alligator snapping turtle when I was about 12. The thing was massive and just as scary looking as the pictures you'll find online. They are legit, they are mean and I'd stay clear of it.

Wow, interesting stuff, I didn't know you guys were really in danger of getting eaten alive by turtles.
Just to keep the TMNT streak going: I'd throw him (it?) a nunchaku just in case, he may start doing some crazy ninja routine and leave me alone

If it had a ridged shell, kind of a beaked snout and was bigger than a breadbox...it was likely a gator snapper. Do you have a pond, or lake nearby (hard to imagine water near fla residences, right?). They ARE potentially dangerous but like most any other critter, if they are not in their normal "hunting" environment...you don't mess with them, they will avoid you. They (the turtles) feed on aquatic, or semi-aquatic prey and do most of their business under water and are not terribly comfortable of mobile on land.

Holy ****, when I posted that joke about being an alligator in the other thread I had no idea that there were these kind of turtles.
It's still a small thing, but I wouldn't like to be in my garden and step on one of them.
edit: ok, forget about the "small thing" stuff:
