Magic General Manager Otis Smith flatly refused to trade J.J. Redick before this season's trade deadline, but he is a little more open to moving the unhappy Duke icon now.

Smith told me that he'd look at dealing Redick either in the June draft or in another trade this summer
.

and

President Bob Vander Weide mentioned recently that while the club considers Nelson among its top seven players, his status doesn

Top seven for Meer. At times, this season, that's very generous.

Why didn't we TRADE him then? How does a player go from untradable to open to trades.

lol this is so funny

"funny", that's one way of putting it.

Top seven??

Dwight
Hedo
Rashard
Evans?
Dooling?
Battie?
Jameer????

I would say top 5. I guess BVW is just being diplomatic.

Not at all.. the Nelson hate is unreal.

I just hate when he gets himself in the air and passes it to the other team

Glad to hear it (and yes I like JJ. free him) but its just a sign of how slow Otis is to see the obvious. You'd be bound to get more for JJ and expirings than JJ by himself. Anyway you slice it wasted opportunity.

well hopefully Otis can redeem himself and get something of value for him

if some team is dumb enough to trade an early 1st round pick for him that would be great

too bad Isiah is no longer GM of the Knicks

im glad JJ has played well offensively in the mop-up minutes he has played. Should boost his value somewhat after rotting on the bench behind the Mogans.

He was the best player available at the time. But not playing or trading him up until now is inexcusable.

ok let's just assume he was the BPA which im not sure of, normal teams play their high first round draft picks and that's how franchises work. They usually play and stuff and contribute to the team. Why did they make it such an awkward situation with him? It was already a controversial pick (regardless if he was BPA which again i dk) but why didnt they just play him, this is so ridiculous, we cannot keep wasting first round picks like this.

btw im just gonna say it now and make it clear

he was a bust

and otis sucks at drafting

iirc, he was injured during both pre-seasons and never worked himself into the rotation - for reasons not publicly discussed.

oh yeah, i completely forgot about that, thanks mhec, iirc, he even was playing well before he got injured and there was some talk (little) he might be starting or at least seeing significant time. But like you say they are reasons unknown about this that will come out later im sure, but something very fishy is going on. How does a high first round pick not see consistent minutes in his second year? Even guokas called redick a rookie last night on accident.

the way this team is built (undersized PG and PF), we need rebounding and defense from our SG....pretty much sums up why JJ couldnt crack the rotation.

Maybe we can use him plus our pick to move up in the draft and get a plyer we really want?

i don t see how memphis could turn down a JJ-2008 pick for Crittenton and a future pick

they get an other 1st pick and get JJ (navarro is FA)

we then are lock at PG for yrs with Nelson, javaris and dooling

PG Nelson,javaris,dooling
SG FA,Evans,Bogans
SF Hedo,Lewis,Bogans
PF Lewis,Battie,Cook
C Howard,Battie,Foyle

FA could be pietrus, sure stan could turn him into something really special. bogans is FA next year ; Pietrus/Evans could be a great combo SG

hope we could bring over fran so he could devellop in 2008 and be ready next season

So, I'm watching the end of the Atlanta game and I see JJ do a couple of nice things during garbage time. I immediately started thinking about how that performance would be received on this board, and before I could finish the thought, he fouled a guy on a three pointer, and then he committed an offensive foul. And then they flashed Mo's statline (27 pts, 4-6 from 3).

To me, that says it all: JJ can hit some shots, but he doesn't do it well enough to make up for his mistakes, especially when we have other guys who can shoot the ball pretty well and don't make those kinds of mistakes (or at least make them at lot less often).

I'm happy to concede that drafting him in the first place might have been a mistake, but playing him over guys who fit better on this team would just compound the mistake. And sure, I'll happily give him up for something useful in return, but I'm not convinced that anybody is going to give us anything of value for him.
